    Default 31048 Firstscope Celestron telescope

This is probably a crazy post to even make. I came across a Craigslist ad for one of these - and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them. They said they bought it 12 years ago so I know it's an old scope - what was appealing to me is the EQ mount so I could learn how to use one - if I decide to go further with any astrophotography I will eventually have to learn an EQ mount, right??

    Celestron Telescope

$20.....I could spend $20 on a learning experience. However - I value the opinions here very much so if this is the equivalent to buying a crummy scope from Walmart, I would rather pass it up then. Plus, it won't teach me anything I want to know if the quality isn't at least somewhat up to par and would probably do more damage to learning how to use an EQ mount than it would good. It's a 2 hour drive for me - which I don't necessarily mind doing because Superior is my home town. Obviously I would not have enough knowledge of what to look for either to know if it is broken/missing anything.

    Would YOU do it??

I would save my money.,for 1.,,what I see advertised as a firstscope.,is a small newt on a tabletop dob style mount.,,not an eq.,,maybe they had a firstscope on an eq I don't know.,,but with a name like "Firstscope".,,I wouldn't expect too much bang for the buck.,,or too much bang at all.,,my2cents.,,good luck.,,O+O

If it was a local drive, yeah, why not. But a two hour drive, nope.

I'd be scouting the local Goodwill stores for similar deals, or the more local ads on Craigslist, yard/garage sales. This type of scope frequently pops up as unwanted and unloved around here. You shouldn't have long to wait.

For a two hour drive, it would have to knock my socks off and make my spouse mad.

Thanks! I assumed it was an EQ mount based on the instruction manual. I couldn't find much at all online except this... Celestron FIRSTSCOPE 114 31048 Instruction Manual (Page 2 of 16) and an old Ebay listing which had better pictures.

HAHA If it were 2 hours anywhere else I would say heck no. Being that it is in my hometown and we haven't been up that way since the beginning of summer I wouldn't mind the drive.

My local Craigslist BLOWS. There are exactly 2 - yes 2 telescopes when searching "telescope". Goodwill is a good suggestion though. I never thought of that before. Man - sometimes I hate living in the boonies. Although in reality I am not "in the market" for a new telescope .... I was looking to find fun accessories.

Speaking of accessories - I have an Oiii filter and Focal reducer coming today! YAY!

Default Re: 31048 Firstscope Celestron telescope

Celestron has used the "Firstscope" name for several different scopes over the years. The scope in the picture you posted is the Firstscope 114. There were two models, one with 0.965" EPs and one with 1.25" EPs. If the focuser uses 1.25" EPs and you don't mind the drive for $20 it might be fun to turn it into a 4.5" Dob if the EQ2 mount proves to be not usable. I have a very similar mount on my Meade 4400 of the same vintage and it is really quite good - much better than the EQ2 mount that comes with current 114mm offerings from Celestron.

As Shelldrake says, if the focuser takes 1.25" EPs then the scope very well could be a good buy at $20. I had a 80mm Firstscope Eq refractor on that same mount. The mount was small and light weight but was capable enough for a small scope as long as you didn't extend the legs of the tripod which made it very low to the ground, the worst thing about the mount. But at $20 I'd be very tempted to at least try it.
