Default Celestron PowerTank lasting only an hour...

My Celestron PowerTank which I purchased in April and which used to work for many hours now appears to be dying out within an hour or so. As I am using, the display dims and the motor moves very slowly and the "needs charging" light appears. Is this to be expected? I have used it a fair amount, probably averaging an hour a day since April. I read somewhere else (I can't recall now) that the PowerTank needs to be charged completely for 24 hours every three months - I have done this but I never reach the "fully charged" light as I did when I first bought it. Should I just get a new PowerTank, or is there any kind of a magical fix?

I do have an AC power supply and when I plug that in, the scope appears to be working fine. So I think the problem is with the PowerTank.

I had a powertank with a similar problem. The issue for me seemed to be that the charger stopped working correctly and the tank never charged. I took apart the device and use the battery with a homemade setup with different parts from Walmart. The battery works great now it was very little work for the change over.
I used this website to make a DIY field battery with a larger deep cycle battery too.

    Hi Ram,

There are many options to power in the field. I've found the most cost effective are the auto jump start batteries from Harbor Freight. YMMV...

I sprung for the power tank also. Have used it only a few times. I hope it holds up better than a lot of posts that I have been reading. There are more cost effective ways to power in the field (WallyWorld system or any deep cycle battery) but the bells and whistles on the Celestron Power Tank hooked me. haha.

one thing these batteries do not like to be fully discharged. They like to be continually charged. And the more you can keep it charged up to full, the better. They don't have memory problem like other batteries. So I would keep it charged and constantly charging if you want to let it live for a long time.

of course if the charger fails, well, that isn't going to help. .

I really like my powertank. The spotlight is great for checking my observing site for overlooked items when I am packing up for the night - of course only when there are no others about to be bothered by the white light.

Sorry to hear of your difficulties. From your description it sounds like your charger or your adapter has failed for your charger has failed.

To me the powertanks cost way too much. My automotive jumpstarters (less than $35 each) are on their sixth year and if I image I use a splitter and run both scope and laptop on a single jumpbox while I run a second scope on the other for up to 8 hrs.

I got a power tank because every jumpstarter I saw cost at least the same or more. Even if I had to buy a new powertank every year, it is still OK for me. I've had mine for a year with no issues.

You should check Harbor Freight or Walmart for jumpstarters at less than half the price of a powertank and much better performance.
