Default Celestron Advanced VX Power Supply and Power Port

    Hey Everyone,

Just wondering if someone could help me out here, I just bought the Celestron Advanced VX 6" Newtonian, and also bought the recommended AC adpater (according to Celstron's website). However the AC adapter clearly isn't working properly for me, has anyone else with an Advanced VX mount been able to use this AC adapter with their mounts? I'm thinking this AC Adapter is actually the correct one and Celestron improperly labeled the a fore mentioned adapter on their website.

Also can someone please post a picture of the inside of their power port on their AVX mount to this thread? After attempting to use celestron's AC adapter I'm now having issues with the car adapter that was originally supplied.

    Thanks!

    Hey Astro_Andruce!

First of all, congrats on your new scope!

Anyway, I've used the provided cigarette adapter with a PowerTank12 to power my AVX. It seems to work quite well.

When I started to get this issue: Help: Celestron AVX No Response 17/16?, I mentioned it to Celestron and they sent me a power adapter: Celestron AC Adapter for the CGE Pro and CGEM Mounts - OPT Telescopes.

The power adapter they sent me didn't fix the error issues, but it powered the mount no problem.
I think your best bet would be to contact Celestron.

I hope that your issue gets resolved
    Merry Christmas!

Default Re: Celestron Advanced VX Power Supply and Power Port

It appears you are correct that the power supply you originally ordered is not correct for the mount. The one you have is only rated for 2.5 amp and the mount specifies 12V DC 3.5A (tip positive).

My assumption is the mount won't slew correctly as it is.

I would suggest contacting Celestron (or dealer you purchased it from) ,advising them of the problem. They should give you a return authorization and you can order the correct one. It appears from the specs that you have found the right one however double check with them to make sure.

Best of luck and congrats on the new scope, I'm sure you will be happy with it once you get the power problem worked out!

Sounds like there's another issue here with the 12 volt side now being wonky. Be sure this gets communicated along with the adapter matter.

I use an AC adapter with my AVX. This is the one I have.. Amazon.com: Celestron 18778 AC Adapter (Black): Camera & Photo

It is only 2.5 Amp but I've been using it for 6 months no problem. Hhhmm wonder if I should buy the 3.5 Amp myself.. never noticed I may be using the wrong one?

The adapter you have is for mounts like the SE mount. (I have both the SE and the AVX mount) I've seen on Celestron's site where it says the 2.5amp model works with the AVX, but it is very under-powered for the mount. You need the Celestron 5amp AC adapter. You will notice it is a threaded male adapter just like the 12v DC adapter that came with your Advanced VX mount.

I've even had a conversation with Celestron about this. They seriously should fix their website where this adapter says it works with the AVX. It is definitely not what you want.

That looks correct. It has the locking threaded nut that locks the cord into place as the car adapter does. I need to pick one of these up. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for the helpful comments, it is greatly appreciated. In summary it sounds like the AC wall adapter I bought should work but the 5 amp ac AC adapter (wall adapter) is better suited for the AVX mount. However for $60 it might be better to just buy a portable power unit since it will most likely be necessary anyhow.

Anyhow I took another look at my power port and it looks like something might be obstructing the power plug from properly attaching itself. It seems it should be easily fixable, however can someone please post a picture of the inside of their port so I can compare it to mine? I attached a picture of my port so people can take a look at it and maybe offer some helpful advice.

Thanks for this. I've already knocked the power out of my mount twice now and was looking to see if this power supply wasn't supposed to have a locking nut on it. And while I haven't noticed any issues yet using the 2.5 amp supplied power, I'll be ordering the 5 amp model. (With a locking nut, yes!)
