Default Celestron CGEM mount versus Vixen SXW (Sphinx) Equatorial Mount for Astrophotography

    Hi
I have a celestron C8 OTA and would like to use it with either a CGEM mount or a Vixen SXW (Sphinx) Equatorial Mount for Deep space Astrophotography. So basically does anyone have an opinion on how these 2 mounts might perform for long exposures?

I have had a CGEM and the DX seems to be only a tripod upgrade. For long exposures the CGEMDX would be better although the CGEM could be improved by a spreader. I have no direct knowledge for the Vixen.

Bruce is right, a new CGEM DX is the same as a CGEM, with the exception of the tripod and counterweight shaft. The CW's for the DX model are the same as the CGE-PRO, and arent the same as the ones for the CGEM. The key is, the DX needs to be either new, or very close to it. Celestron upgraded the mount motor boards within the last year the DX has a greater payload than the basic CGEM. User friendly wise.....the CGEM is fairly heavy.....the DX is a real BEAST! Don't expect to run and gun with it.. the tripod is close to 50++ lbs, without the mount head........so plan accordingly.

I know a few folks with experience with the Sphinx setups, and none of them are positive. You will have to do some research, but I believe you will find the same result. The "Starbook" controller looks cool, but a CGEM is a solid mount. The DX has a 22lb counterweight standard......I dont believe you can even balance your OTA on a DX.

    IMHO.....no Vixen......Get a CGEM and be happy.
