Default Celestron: Deal or No Deal?

Why? I emailed Celestron; after 4 days I checked my "celestron box"... they don't actually email you back, you have to check back with them with a code. Any-who, my question to them was why the 9.25HD was not offered in a package deal on the DX mount?
Here's the breakdown on what they do offer:
    9.25HD on a CGEM: $3149.00 (as of 8/29/2012). 9.25HD ($2069.00), CGEM ($1349.00) for a savings of $269.00.
    1100HD on a CGEM: $3599.00. 1100HD ($3059.00), CGEM ($1349.00) for a savings of $809.00.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    9.25HD on a CGEM DX. (N/A)
    1100HD on a CGEM DX: $3959.00. CGEM DX ($1799.00) for a savings of $899.00
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    9.25HD on a Pro. $6209.00. Pro ($4499.00) for a saving of $359.00.
    1100HD on a Pro. $7199.00. Pro ($4499.00) for a savings of $359.00.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Their reply to my question..." the DX mount is intended for the 11" & 14" otas". If that was really the case, why do they then offer the 9.25HD on the Pro? Why skip the DX?
I guess I should just look at the numbers; the 1100HD in the packages is a major savings over what they offer the 9.25HD for. So for a pure money question, the 1100HD is a great deal in all the packages. But... I'm just one of those weirdo's who wants to know everything in the decisions process. Are they hiding something?

You are questioning the "mighty minds" of marketing and sales, a multi-dimensional oxymoron... with heavy emphasis on the 'moron' syllable...

The 8" and 9.25" OTA are close in relative weight and performance. The 9.25" OTA is not in the marketing and sales sweet-spot on any of the mount bundles, and is manufactured in overall lower relative volume.

Some people buy a particular bundle with the actual intent/mind-set of "the OTA doesn't matter", they are looking for the best end-price on a particular mount and gear combination that may, or may not include the totality of components in a particular bundle.

In other cases, you're swimming upstream in the Celestron marketing scheme, where they would like to upsell the 11" or 14" OTA, which may in some cases be too heavy for the mount included in a specific bundle.

They're not "hiding" anything, this is just a game that all sales & marketing organizations play against the consumer - the "bundling" or optioning of a given base item against what is included in the package, and its market price is an attempt to maximize their margin and revenue dollar against what they have to provide at that price point.

I think the PRO with a 9.25HD wouldn't even know it was up there. Celestron also sells a CG5/C11 combo. I'm curious why they have the CG5 mounts under "sports and outdoors" now though. Its better to have too much mount and too little scope than the other way around. With a sufficient mount you can always use longer exposure times while the other way around you won't have that option.

The "big three" consumer distributors often bundle/package OTA/mount combinations that don't make pragmatic sense.

For visual use, it doesn't much matter - for AP use, these bundles can pose long-term problems - often you see a 10" or 11" OTA bundled with a CG-5 class mount, or an 11" or 14" OTA bundled with an HEQ6/CGEM class mount.

It is truly a case of caveat-emptor, based on understanding of the variables involved.

The HEQ6 Synta mounts are a classic example of this bundling-foo - they are OK for 8" OTA and related working loads for imaging, if the end-user can balance, tune and align the mount. On the other hand, they lead to endless frustration for those who don't have the patience/skill to deal with the marginal precision of this mount with a relatively light working load, or worse yet end up with a large-aperture OTA and all the related crap, fighting bad advice, marketing hype, and a combination of impossible conditions (seeing, light pollution levels, flexure, image/pixel scale, and so on...).

The mass-produced Synta mounts are a good value, if and only if, you are aware of their limitations - and either able to work within them, or have the resources to stretch the performance envelope of these mounts.
