    Default My Monster C10-N

Iím back, hopefully for good. Here is my monster C10-N from my last couple of outings. Iím a galaxy hunter and enjoy going after the faint little fuzzies. Iíve only been out two times this year and yes I got the shakes really bad. Iím getting back into it after a while on hiatus because of college and life. I also plan on getting another OTA for my mount. Iím starting my astrophotography shopping soon but I want to make sure Iím getting the right equipment. The reflector I have now is just not very well suited for astrophotography; itís too heavy and shaky. The mount I have is still in good shape so all I need is the OTA. I already have the equipment to attach my Canon XS to the focuser. It will be a while before I get a new one, so Iím still shopping around.

    Canon EOS Rebel XS (1000D)
    Celestron AstroMaster 114 EQ Reflector
    Advanced Series GT C10-N Reflector
    Orion 8" f/4.0 Newtonian Astrograph
    ShortTube 80mm f/5.0 refractor
    CG-5 Mount

    What a monster
Your right the CG5 doesn't like weight.
A good 80mm triplet will do you just fine or the new astro-tech quad but thats not very cheap to start you off
I hope you find what your looking for and welcome back to the hobby
    Ken

Wow I once bid on one of those on eBay, and arranged for a friend who lived close to it to pick it up. Glad I didn't win.. Looks Awsome and VERY giant.. but the SCT 8SE is better for keeping the view near my daughter's eye level

Thanks for the replies and the tips.

Right now my budget for the OTA is around $1000 but that may change. Iím looking at two completely different OTAís right now. Iím looking at the Celestron C8-A Schmidt-Cassegrain Optical Tube Assembly - Telescopes at Telescopes and the Sky-Watcher PRO 100ED APO Refractor OTA - Telescopes at Telescopes. I know I want to stick with Celestron, because all the equipment I have in Celestron. I know I want to do more than just planetary imaging. On the other hand Iíve never used a Cassegrain but Iím a fast learner. The reflector tube I have now weighs 31lbs while the Skywatcher weighs 29 lbs and the Cassegrain weighs 12.5lbs, considerably less. I am really leaning toward getting the Cassegrain right now. But like I said, Iím still shopping.

Given that... I would look for a used 8 SE... it has a dove tail that will let you move it between the Alt-Az goto for casual viewing and then to the CG5 for better guiding.. I wish the one I was selling had the dove tail based mount for you because the optics on the scope are in really good condition..

Iíve had bad luck buying used online. I wonít really know if the scope is in good condition. Buying new thereís less of a chance of something being broken or missing. Iíve looked on EBay at used scopes but itís hard to make heads or tails of their condition. I like the idea of going from observing to photography without changing mounts as well. This purchase wonít be until the first of the year so I still have plenty of time and research to do.

    Understood..
Try Craigslist in your state.. Around Seattle there is an 8SE listed 2-3 times a month within 90 minutes drive and a ton of other OTAs.. .. That is where I got mine... I had to epoxy the tripod tightener.. but I knew that when I picked it up and was able to check out the condition of the corrector plate and mirror. Doing a live pick-up. But getting a complete set up for .40 on the dollar vs online new...was worth a little epoxy. Also maybe an in warranty open box deal might pop up if you really like that level of protection.

A lot of my gear came from the used classified market. I bought my mount and a few other odds and ends brand new. I have been 100% satisfied with my stuff so far. Don't be afraid of the used market, just make sure you know who you are dealing with and that they are legit.

    Jim
Celestron C9.25. Atlas EQG mount. Canon 500D unmodded, Celestron ST80 guide scope, SSAG, Meade 6.3 FR, Thousand Oaks dew control with Dewnot straps. Zhumell 8/24mm Zoom, 2"Gso Superview 42mm, Meade 2"QX wide angle 30MM, Meade 1.25 EP and filter set. Tasco 10x50 Zhumell 20x80 bino and a few other odds and ends.
Now where did I put that clear sky button!
