Default NexStar 114GT

1. "OHIO" dosent appear in the list of states to choose from.

2. When i roughly align the telescope, without any stars, just time, date, year, where i am, it point almost perfectly 45' away from the place where it should be. i am using an AC adapter so i know that it has plenty of power.

3. A strange noise is constantly emitted when the telescope is aligned? not sure if it is normal or not.

I know i havent aligned it with any stars yet.. mainly because it is, and will be cloudy for the next 2 weeks!
But when i roughly aligned it, and told it to point to the sun(i had the dust cap on, dont worry, im taking care of it) the telescope pointed northeast, even though, the sun was clearly setting in the west.

i am concerned about this and im wondering if anyone has had any problems aligning this device before

This is my telescope that i just recieved for my 15th birthday, just a few days ago....

Thank you.

Hi Dan,

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry I know nothing about the Nexstar mount, but we do have a couple of regulars who have nexstars and should be online again soon enough. Hang in there

Hello Dan,

Welcome to Astronomy Forum. Is your 114GT a new model, or is it used. If new, you should have a SkyAlign hand control.

Here's and interesting link that may help you with alignment procedure. [Registered users can see links. ].

I hope this helps, if not ... come on back and we'll see what we can do.

Once again, welcome aboard!

Hi Dan,

I'm not familiar with the NexStar 114GT, however this link: [Registered users can see links. ] should help you with alignment procedures. Be sure to enter all data asked for accurately ... I'm not sure what the noise is that you're hearing ???

I hope this helps.

well. i have found the soultion to some of my problems.. but i have new ones.

1. i have found that the telescope model number was wrong, even tho it was set to 114mm, that fixed some of the problems.

2. OHIO isnt listed because it is under NOrth Dakota, and i found cleveland there.

3. BUT. i was able to align it with the star a few nights ago, ( i got some nice pictures too) but when i pointed it at the moon, it was about 5 degrees off to the right, and about 5 degrees too low.

at frist when it went t the moon, i t pointed right at it, and it was good, but it moved on its own, it was still slewing. and it moved it to thhose 5 degrres off.

that but at least my problems are shortend right?
