Default Best Grease for Nexstar / CPC According to Super Lube Expert

I recently completed my second teardown of a CPC to replace the factory plastic bearing balls with steel. I did this job on a CPC1100 and at that time I used Super Lube Multipurpose Synthetic Grease. This time it was a CPC925 and I used the same grease, but afterword I had second thoughts. I emailed Super Lube with specific information about the mount, including payloads and rotational speeds, need for minimum sticktion etc.

The technical rep recommended SUPER LUBE« HIGH TEMPERATURE EXTREME PRESSURE GREASE WITH SYNCOLON« (PTFE).

My internet research discovered a fair number of forum posts and company websites that pointed to EP grease as the right choice even for a low speed low temperature operation in part because the additives addressed the problem of wiping the lubricant off the mating surfaces. The Super Lube recommendation appears to support that view but it does not mean that other brands and types of EP grease (moly for example) would not do the job.

I am getting very comfortable now with tearing down a CPC or SE mount, so changing the grease is a good rainy day job. The mount is on a pier and wedge, and the process begins with cranking the wedge down to level, then a lift and pivot to a close by table. On completion a short lift onto the wedge, crank it back up and then use the super easy polar alignment tool in SharpCap to fine tune the alignment.

CPC owners interested in the bearing ball replacement (to all steel or the current 50-50 mix with plastic) can find the instructions at http://www.nexstarsite.com/download/...aringBalls.pdf and for the similar Edge HD version at EdgeHD CPC Azimuth/RA Axis Rebuild | Orion Ranch Observatory Blog

Alex at Celestron provided this update about Mobil 1 synthetic grease.

"Yes, we still recommend using this grease. This is the grease our repairs technicians use here at our facilities."

For those who understand lubrication better than I do you can find the spec sheet for Super Lube EP grease at High Temp/EP Grease and a link to the Mobil 1 product data sheet at https://www.mobil.com/en/industrial/...nthetic-Grease

Either way you have two clear recommendations from people who have good reason to know.
