    Default NexStar 8

Would you avoid this telescope because of problems with the mount, including the fact that the hand control can't be upgraded or replaced (if it fails, for example) with any other Celestron hand control?

If in the future you would have problems with mount, you could remove OTA from mount and put the OTA on an EQ mount.
If OTA is in good shape I don't see a problem buying this set-up if the price is right.

Could you be more specific about these 'problems' with the mount you are referring to? I have an 8SE and there are no problems with the mount other than it is not stable enough for astrophotography, but I knew that limitation when I bought it and it suits my needs so no issue there.

The fact that you can only replace the Nexstar handset with another Nexstar handset is not really an issue, because it is after all a Nexstar scope. If you have problems with you scope after purchase you can always get it replaced during your guarantee period as with anything else. If it happens outside your guarantee period Celestron will be able to supply you with a new onee has been available for years.

With respect to upgrading the Nexstar controller, you can indeed do so when Celestron release new firmware versions. Just check their web site for details on how to do this. It is a fairly simple procedure via USB to serial connection to your computer.

To be honest, I don't see the issues you are talking about as being serious.

I am not sure who told you the hand control can not be replaced, there are plenty around on the second hand market, and the SE8 controller is the same as all the scopes in the Nexstar family of scopes. The mount is fine except the weight of the OTA is near the top end of its load capacity. Makes the scope a little more sensitive to wind and vibration, but nothing a milk jug full of water and a bungi cord can't go a long way to fixing. For the price point I would not hesitate to recommend the scope for anyone wanting the features this scope offers

The ORIGINAL Hand Controller on the Original Nexstar 8 CAN NOT BE REPLACE with any other Hand Controller EXCEPT the original HC...NONE of the later model Hand Controllers work with that scope...NONE !

The Nexstar 8 was the original model...the next model was the 8i ..the following model was the 8iSE (8i special edition) then the 8SE

You can use any of the latest HC on the 8i the 8iSE and the 8SE BUT NOT THE ORIGINAL NS8 "Some" of the early 8iSE came with version 2.xx hand Controllers like the 8i which did not have Skyalign and used North and Level as their alignment method.. The later models of the 8iSE used version 4.xx hand controllers with sky align as did the 8SE when they first came out.. a few years ago Celestron introduced the Nexstar PLUS Version 5.xx hand controllers...

The 8i 8iSE and 8Se all can use any of the version 4 and version 5 hand controllers...(which BTW works on my CPC1100 also

    Bob G

    I own an 8i ....i use a Version 4.xx controller on it

Would I buy a used NexStar 8? Only if it were a super bargain. As Bob said, the NexStar 8 is four generations old does have up-grade and hand controller replacement issues. I personally would consider buying one if it were in good working order BUT would not want to pay more than the value of the 8 inch SCT OTA.

Yep, that's what Bob advised, based on the reasons he's given above. And I confirmed with Celestron what he said. The earliest NexStar hand controllers cannot be upgraded, and the NexStar 8 (not the 8i or 8SE) cannot use a later hand control.

It IS confusing. It's why trying to buy a telescope requires a long tutorial. But thanks to the knowledge and forbearance of people on this and other forums, it's possible.
