Default Nexstar 4SE won't adjust Azimuth

    Hello All,

I am a newb on the forum. I am just returning to stargazing as a hobby after recovering from some health issues and bought myself a new NexStar 4SE, accessory kit, etc. I got the scope to day, assembled, and tried to test it out. I cannot get it to adjust move in the azimuth direction. Altitude works just fine, but you can't even move it by hand in az. I did some searching and can't find anything. I sent an e-mail to support at Celestron - but was hoping one of you may have had this experience and know a simple fix. I tried both with the mount on the tripod and just sitting on a table.

I tried connecting it to Stellarium and trying to slew it to an object - same thing. It will adjust the Alt but no AZ movement.

I am beginning to think that the hand piece is probably bad or maybe the whole mount.

Hi, Welcome to the Astronomy Forum.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties with your new 4SE. The 4SE mount is not movable by hand in azimuth. Doing so can damage the mount. While you can move the telescope in altitude, tis best to do so only if you must

Sounds like a defective azimuth drive motor. Contact your seller for an exchange as this may be faster than warranty service from Celestron.

What Joe (Sxinias) said... Just DO NOT MOVE that scope by hand in azimuth ....

Send it back if it does not move when using the HC and it should go back to the dealer NOT Celestron

Thanks Gentlemen. Unfortunately, the dealer won't take it back. I bought it via Miles from the Delta SkyMiles Marketplace. I think it was Excess shipped from a warehouse in Nevada (The box had a Discovery Store Label on it!).

BTW, I am a Camaro Guy - I have my 1974 Camaro in my parents Garage!

In that case, contact Celestron to see if you can get warranty service even though you did not buy the telescope from an authorized dealer.

Fall back positions in case Celestron will not honor a warranty.... go to the Celestron web site to the support page. Click on the repair parts tab and order a replacement AZ motor. That's how I repaired my 4SE. I'm making an assumption that they still carry the spare motors as I am outside the USA and prohibited from accessing the repair parts pages. Another is to send the telescope back to Celestron and pay for repairs. One of our members did that recently. The 4SE is a great telescope and well worth getting it going. see: Great news from a happy Celestron owner
