    Default C8 Prototype, 1967

Hey everyone, what a great find this is. I am in the posetion of a Celestron C8 prototype hand built by Tom Johnson and his brother. My father was asked to evaluate the scope prior to the mass production of the C8.

I have attached the description my father sent to me and I also have some photos of the telescope.

Tom Johnson brought it to me for evaluation as I was purchasing a Celestron 22” for the Denver Planetarium. It is a prototype C8. Test color Orange, 2 motor clock drive for tracking. Mechanical dec control.. large aluminum focus control.. pure alt azimuth operation with portable wedge to set latitude of operation.. setting circles for RA and dec.. all mechanical with manual clamps..

I was wondering if anyone would know what the value might be?

please feel free to e-mail me or post.

Have a grand day and keep looking up,

    Matt

You'll have to wait for more posts before you can attach images. No idea of collector value, I'd keep the letter with the scope though. How are the optics and does the clock drive still work? That's a nice little piece of amature astro history you have.

I will ask if the clock drive still works. It sure is a heavy beast. I know the mirror is not in good shape, age and being in a humid environment. But is is a fun piece of history.

Wow, I don't have an SCT in my collection, that would sure fill the gap nicely.

Have you contacted Celestron? I would say that as a used scope needing re-coating it would be worth about $200-$250, but the provinance would raise the price by at least a couple of orders of magnitude, maybe three.

Let's be honest -- an old SCT that needs its mirror recoated does not have a lot of value. Best to sell it for $200-$250 to someone that wants to spend the time and some money refurbishing the scope--- and move on.

Lol, I am just a lonely optics junkie, Matt, but I'll try a bit of research to help you out.

Joe may be right, but I think the possibility of the provinance of this piece of history multiplying it's value is worth investigating. I would think that Celestron would at least trade you a nice new state of the art kit for it. If not, I would buy it myself for it's used value.

    I'll get back to you.

Thanks guys, I know that this telescope is in some older shape but I have to think that being one of the 1st ones, hand built by Tom and his brother it has to have a value greater then the sum of its parts. I use to hang out with Tom when he visited with my dad, he was a great guy and a hoot to be with.

It is nice to get some feed back.
