    Default Proposed imaging setup

I am planning a sojurn into the field of astroimaging, and would value opinions on the following setup.

    Vixen VMC110L
    Microsoft Lifecam Cinema

    Total weight +- 5 pounds
    Mounted on my motorized EQ2
Meade 16" LightBridge; Celestron G-8N Bird-Jones/motorized EQ5; Orion 127 Mak/go-to EQ5; Burgess 127f8 refractor; Sky-Watcher 5" F/5 collapsible dob; 90mm Mak/motorized EQ2; Royal Astro 76/910-GEM; Meade 60x700 refractor/alt/az; Zhumell 25x100 Coin Ops; GalilleoScope. Celestron 8mm-24mm zoom; lots of fixed EPs,some good, some..not so much. A small collection of surveying instruments; a forest of tripods; Canon Rebel Xti. Confirmed gadget junkie; Custodian of the Magnetic North Pole (Send $1.00 to Pierre each time you use a compass.)

I think the little Vixen is a sound choice.

I do have some thoughts, really things to confirm with the camera:

    - to use Registax or similar utilities for still image production via stacking, the camera needs to produce an AVI format file. If you plan to use Registax, or something similar you'll need to confirm that the camera can directly generate, or via the Windows interface, generate an AVI output file. If it can generate a WMV, you can probably find a utility to convert WMV to AVI.

    - the autofocus feature might get in your way - atmospheric seeing confuses most AF systems, so they constantly shift the image focus without ever getting there. Most AF algorithms also rely on a very sharp light to dark (or vice-versa) contrast line in the image (usually an edge boundary on whatever object is in frame and the subject of focus). This is usually lacking in AP imaging, further confounding the AF algorithm. It would probably be handy if the AF feature can be disabled.

    - You may find it necessary to remove the lens - most modded web cams for AP have this done to them. All of the AP specific web-cam style imagers (i.e. Neximage, Meade, Orion) are also lens-less. They are used in prime-focus, direct objective style, just inserted into the focuser draw-tube and the prime image focused directly on the sensor.

    - If you have to remove the lens, the microphone "bump" on the camera body may interfere with insertion into the focuser draw-tube.

    Just stuff to consider...

Thanks, Austin. Those were pretty well my considerations as well. A bit more research is in order.

Been looking into webcams as well and I'm really surprised there are so few high rez cams available. Guess it's not a popular market. I too was looking upon the MS lifecam as an option because of the better resolution but after viewing those modifications I think I'll pass. Think I'd rather spend $350 on a used dslr than go through all that and possibly fail.
