    Default Xbox live vision camera

Hello All, I have a question.

    First some history.

I had an old logitec quickcam e2500 webcam, I tore it apart, and removed the lens, and ir-filter. Then installed that into a 35mm film container.
This does not work very good, it seems it magnifies to much, it brings the moon upo real close, and only afew craters are visiable. Best resolution is only 640X480 under wxastrocapture.

Today I stoped at a Yard Sale, and found a Microsoft X-box 360 Live Vision web camera, works great on my laptop and wxAstro capture. Payed $5.00 for it.

It has these resoulutions under wxastrocapture
    320X240
    352X288
    640X480
    960X720
    1280X960

I'm wandering if I should remove the lens, and fix it like Prime Focus, or just try Aphocal with it?

Well it works, I need to figure out how to best use it. It has a Big sensor compared to the logitec quickcam e2500 I have. Here are some pictures to show comparison. I'm not sure if the Microsoft Live Vision is CCD, or if it's CMOS? And I'm not 100% clear of the megam pixel size.

And I need to figure out how to best set the setting in the software, there is a ton of setting in wxastrocapture. Does anyone know or have any particular setting on paper or mental notes? Or is there anything free that works better that you are aware of?

Yesterday I ordered a SteadyPix Delux from Orion, supost to be here on 07-12-2010.

Also I hope to have a dual axis Eq-3M drive on order in a couple months so I can make better images. Also I'd like to get one of them focus things so I can adjust the focus with out shakeing the scope.

Thanks will update along as I figure out new things.

OK here is my xbox live vision web camera/astro imager. I been haveing much trouble with hot pixels, this should help. I drilled small holes around the sides of the box, then cut a nice hole the size of the fan, then put some two sided foam tape between the fan and box to help keep the vibratons down, then screwed it down. Next went around the sides with some hot glue to fill in the 1/16 gap the foam left. I have the fan installed so it will draw air in thru the holes, and draw out the heat from the chip. I have a 12v 500mA dv power adapter to run the fan. Hope to try it out late tonight on jupiter.

Don'y laugh I piggy backed my cheap meade 60mm refractor on my orion 6" the meade tripod gears was stripped so what the hey. lol The little scope was a freebie.

I'm REALLY interested to find out how well this works. I no longer have a camera to take pictures with, but I do have the same webcam and all it's done is collect dust since i got it. It would be nice to put it to some use. I'm a little worried about the low resolution it seems to have when connected to the box. Did you have to modify the camera at all? Or did you just add the fan, etc.

All I did was remove the Lens, un-screwed it and left it off. Nothing on the board but the CCD, and the IR-filter in front of it. And installed it in the box, and added the fan. The moon is vlear as a bell thru it.

Getting the setting just right in wXastrocapture is key I think. Here are my setting so far. I may need to tweek them a bit more.

We need to start a data base of webcam types, and settings that work best for each under wXastrocapture, and have a page just for this purpose.

I'll have to try that. I got anxious and ran out with the camera as is rubber banded to the eyepeice. Too many clouds to really get a good look at anything and try to calibrate it. Hopefully (but unlikely) I'll get some clear nights and can try some of your setting and see what comes out.

Hey I agree, we can start a database with models and then go from there. I am actually setting up a review area for scopes, binos, and imagers.

I want to add webcams to that and have people post whether their settings, and photos for each cam +/- mods. What do you think?
