Default We Three Mak’s of Orient Are

Just thought I'd share these pictures:

These are all Synta-made Mak's. The 102mm SkyMax (middle) was the first Maksutov I owned and is the only one of the three that doesn't have a Vixen style dovetail.

The 127mm SkyMax (above) came bundled with the AZ5 mount.

The 90mm Orion StarMax has probably been the most versatile though as it is so portable.

I've seen Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus and Mercury with the 90mm Mak. Plus a fair few DSO's. I even saw a bleached Saturn in daylight with it.
TS Optics: 150mm, f/6 Newtonian (GSO SVD series). Altair: Starwave 102ED-R. Orion: 90mm StarMax , ST80 (TS Focuser). Celestron: NexStar Evolution 9.25". William Optics: E-BINO-P Binoviewer. A shed load of eyepieces including: Antares, Astro Hutech, Baader, Bresser, BST, Bushnell, Celestron, Explore Scientific, GSO, Kokusai, Meade, Orion, Sky-Watcher, Solomark, SvBony, TeleVue, Vixen & one or two I'm not sure of.

Thanks Terry. The carrying bag actually came supplied with a 90mm Omegon Maksutov.

The Omegon cost about the same as the Orion. I wasn't sure which one to buy. I went for the Omegon, it was a mistake.

It seems predominantly constructed from Bakelite and Lego. It won't focus sharply above about 30x. It's not even a good paperweight.

It is also marketed as the Kasai Pico. I think Pico means load of bollocks in Japanese lol.

So I ended up buying the Orion Mak I originally wanted.

Hi SB. These are great photographs of your fine Mak collection. My brands went the other way. My first one was a Sky-Watcher C90, followed by a used Orion 127, which I resold to buy a new Orion 180. When my son moved to Lansing, MI. from Orlando, FL., he left me the C90 that I gave him, when I bought the used Orion127 years ago. It includes the carrying bag and a 45° Erect Prism. I am thinking of putting the C90 back into service as a nature/wildlife scope, if I can find the proper camera adapter. Thanks for sharing your excellent Mak photos with us on here SB, and the best of wishes for many clear skies.

Never heard of the Omegon brand, would have chosen the Orion version straight away.

My Celestron 90mm Mak came with its own backpack. Marketed as a spotting scope, but I took out the erect prism diagonal and use it with a 90 deg dielectric diagonal the few times I've used it.

I think I originally decided on the Omegon Mak as it was around f/11.

This is the Kasai Pico version.

Omegon is a marketing name in Europe (Germany) for Astroshop.

I bought this Swedish Oklop Maksutov case for the 127mm.

Thanks. I bought the Orion and the SW 127mm as they had Vixen dovetails.

Re: Omegon - good to know, thanks.

Nice to have a lot of scopes, as long as they are housed in their own carrying cases/bags so they don't take up much space and are easily transportable. All my scopes are stored in this way (except my largest one at the moment).

    Very nice thread SB!
It seems that I am not the only one who ever bought a "lemon" for a telescope.
I have two Maks. A 140mm OMC, bought in 2000, optically rather good. And a Skywatcher 102mm bought secondhand in 2013, optically somewhat less good than the OMC. But, as always, I use the smaller one far more often than the bigger one. Which means that the smaller 102 is my better friend of the two. I have seen several optical testpictures of the small 102mm Skywatchers. Almost all seem rather satisfying.
