Default Attaching Finder Scope and Dovetail Bar to new Celestron CGEM 800 EdgeHD

    All:

My wife is ecstatic about her new CGEM 800 EdgeHD telescope! We have been going through the process of setting it all up and so far, its gone very well. But I am to a point where what I see is not in the instructions so I thought I would ask for some help.

I am to the point where I am need to attach the 50mm Finderscope #51611 bracket to the OTA. The instructions mention "screws" that are supposed to be with the mount, but the mount does not have these screws (I do have the thumb screws, just not any to attach the mount to the OTA). Furthermore, on the black band around the bottom rim of the OTA, I see how I could use two of the screws on the scope to attach the Finderscope mount to the OTA. But the instructions don't say anything about this. Can someone tell me how I am supposed to attach the Finderscope to the OTA? Do I just loosen two of the screws on the lower rim and attach the mount and then replace those same screws? Or am I missing something more significant that is required?

My second question is about the 2nd Dovetail Bar to attach my 80mm Guidescope kit to the OTA. I can see how the Dovetail Bar will fit nicely along the length of the OTA, but again, there are not any holes in the OTA that line up with the holes in the Dovetail bar. At the top of the OTA, there is a screw on the black rim that I could use to attach the Dovetail bar and there are two screws on the bottom rim that line up with the holes in the bottom of the Dovetail bar so if I remove and replace these three screws already in the OTA, then the dovetail bar will attach. But the Dovetail bar comes with three Alan-wrench headed screws and I am not sure I could use the screws in the black band around the rim of the OTA.

I cannot imagine drilling holes in the black rim at the bottom and top to attach the Finderscope mount or the Dovetail Bar. Can someone tell me how to attach the bracket for the 50mm Finderscope and how to attach the 2nd Dovetail bar for the 80mm Guidescope to my 800 EdgeHD OTA?

One other thing I notice is on the top black band around the outer rim of the OTA, there are two small holes pre-drilled without screws. And the Dovetail bar will not line up on the bottom end if I tried to use one of those holes at the top edge, so I don't see any purpose for those two pre-drilled holes in the outer black ring around the rim at the top end of the OTA.

    Thanks!
    Bryan

Yes, you unscrew the screws for the stock finder scope. Be careful not to unscrew the screws near the edge of the ring..

Not sure what dovetail bar you have but it should have came with radius blocks (or the dovetail is curved?) to allow attachment to the curved OTA. Those pre-drilled holes are what you are suppose to use... It sounds like your dovetail kit is not for an 8" SCT OTA but a dovetail meant to mount onto a clamp and the holes in the dovetail are to mount telescope rings...

I looked again at the screws on the OTA , and there are 6 of these black Phillips-head screws that seem intended to be used to attach accessories. I see what you mean about not removing the other screws that are flush-mounted into the OTA, whereas the 6 on the lower end at the top of the OTA are all not flush-mounted and look like they are meant to be removed.

Yes, my Dovetail Bar is curved. So it does fit flush with the OTA. And the holes in the Dovetail do align with those Phillips head screws that are not recessed. Just judging that these larger Phillips-head screws appear to be to attach accessories, it means I can attach the Dovetail and the stock Finderscope to the OTA. The instructions are clearly for an older version of the OTA, so I can imagine with the EdgeHD OTA, they added these accessory screws to the OTA rather than pre-drilled (empty) holes.

    Thank you!
