    Default C11 Edge HD arrives...

Months earlier than anticipated the friendly folks at Hands On Optics in Damascus, Maryland came through with a shiny new Celestron C11 Edge HD. It had to sit in the garage for a few weeks before I got to mount it up, but that gave me a chance to make a few adjustments before my attempt at a First Light. When I finally got it outside and up on the mount I had no trouble balancing the OTA on my "Atlosmandy" mount, everything moved perfectly. I fired up the electronics and got under way...and then my arch nemesis made his appearance: The Collimation. In short, the Edge was badly out of alignment. I tried for an hour and a half climbing up and down the step ladder making minute adjustments to the horrid little black Phillips head screws before calling it quits and breaking out my trusty C925 for some imaging. Nothing I did seemed to move the secondary in a positive direction and I held my breath whenever my screwdriver was anywhere near the corrector plate. So, I brought the OTA in and promptly ordered a set of Bob's Knobs (they should be here by Friday), I'll have another go this weekend weather permitting. I'm not really irritated, this is all part of breaking in a new Cat as far as I am concerned. I promise I'll return with a proper First Light as soon as possible. In the meantime, here are a couple of shots of the new kit.

    Clear Skies, Brian

Thanks Rich. It was an all Sherri thing, I placed my order with her and she did the call back...I wasn't expecting to hear anything before December. No complaints on my part, they took real good care of me!

Beautiful looking scope, and all reports have been Celestron is really making the grade with these. Mirror locks! Field flattener! OTA vents!Congratulations on the latest and greatest! Are you getting the (I can't remember their name) focal reducer for it? Can't wait for your first light and first image(s). Are you keeping the 'C' dovetail or will be adding a Losmandy or other dovetail plate?

I hear ya about the collimation, it's like getting to know a new friend. Hope you clear skies as a short new scope curse.

This is the second Edge scope that I have heard that was delivered out of collimation...the other was a 8 inch... so I assume Celestron has stopped double and triple checking them before shipment..

I only deal with 2 dealers (both within an hour of my home) and Hands on Optics gets the majority of my business BUT I also deal with Company 7..... Both are within an Hours drive of my home

80 percent of my purchases are however from hands On Optics... Mainly because I can configure the scope the way I like them I deleted the Diagonal, Finder, and eliminated the OEM eyepiece for store credit towards another Pentax XW when I picked up my CPC1100 ...BUT also because they are NOT pushy will answer questions and Gary especially will tell you flat out when you are wasting your money ... The dogs in the showroom (lol) are also major draw for me

However to be honest IF I was purchasing an HD scope I'd pay the extra money and buy from Company 7 and let them test it out completely optically ...

Congratulations Brian, that's a lovely looking scope.

    ........and you're the Collimation King!

You're going to have so much fun! Enjoy it my friend

Oooh, I wonder if I can guess what your first light imaging target will be? I'm thinking Jupiter or the Moon............ or maybe you'll surprise us with a DSO? Decisions, decisions eh? Astronomy teaches patience, so we'll just have to wait and see!

I hope you get some good clear skies this weekend.

    All the very best
