I called Orion last month about the cost of shipping an 8" Dob up. Got an email the next day saying the shipping was *very* expensive and they suggested it would be much cheaper to order via one of their Cdn dealers.

I do live in the NWT (a 5 min walk to the Alberta border) and it was a large package. Maybe smaller items are not so bad?

I'd check the Canadian shops first.

I really want my next telescope to be a Orion Dobsonian XT10i and after that a 14 or 16. I called Orion and was told shipping was really expensive as well.

I have been checking out the dealers all the ones in Alberta and one in BC. I see a lot of classic Dobs being sold, the 10 inch classic seems to be a favorite. I'm buying my next scope out of BC, an Orion xt10i. It's free shipping anywhere in Canada!!

Thanks etagem, I guess they just don't have Orion scopes listed yet on the website. I'll give them a call and see what sizes and types they carry.

On another note, does anyone know anything about The Genstar Telescope? Is this company still in business? I have searched for them before and could not find a website other then the The Science Shop.

The owner of Genstar is a friend of mine and unfortunately, he has decided not to make any further models of his scope. They were very popular, but due to rising costs and no time, he has decided to shut down the business.

I recently purchased a G3 StarShoot CCD camera from Telescopes.com, which is the official Orion website out West. The price was $100 off but because of shipping, taxes, and customs, it actually cost more than if I had purchased it from somewhere here in Canada. It was a good learning experience.

Telescopes.com is not affiliated with Orion. Orion's website is telescope.com
I think telescopes.com was on purpose to confuse people.

Canadian Telescopes (in BC) sells Orion. I have been very satisfied with CT on all counts. There was some chatter about them in the forums about a year ago. The concerns seemed to be resolved since they opened a retail outlet in Burnaby.
