    Default Hello from Ontario, Canada

Hello all, I'm Wayne Martin from Chatham-Kent Ontario, Canada. Completely new to astronomy, my wife had a telescope when she was a kid but she gave it away to a niece years ago. I'm looking at the Orion Skyquest XT8 right now, unless someone has a better suggestion I'm all ears.

I'm in the country, so light pollution is minimal with a 5 minute drive, I'm also within an hour drive to Point Pelee National Park which has a dark sky preserve? I think that's what it's called. Problem with were I am is, there no specialty scope stores around me, the closest one I see to me is in Kitchener-Waterloo. Anyone know of any in London or Windsor Ontario? I don't have a problem ordering online as I have to go that way with many of my other hobbies, but I'm the kind of guy that likes to get my hands on a product and talk to a individual that knows about it before buying something new to me.

    Welcome to the forum
The XT 8 is a very good telescope
Also if you can invest in some good eyepieces and maybe a decent pair of binoculars.

Hi and welcome. Nice to see a new member from Ontario, especially one only about an hour from Windsor

The XT8 is a great scope and very similar to my Skywatcher 8" Dob. I totally agree with Brodavid1953 regarding eye pieces (EP's) and binoculars but take your time with adding EP's - get comfortable with what you have first (I was given that advice here early in this hobby and took it with no regrets)

I've dealt with KW Telescopes for years and feel they are great ( https://www.kwtelescope.com/ )

As for Point Pelee, here's their schedule - Dark sky nights - Point Pelee National Park

    Good luck!

Thank you for the response, are the eyepieces that come with the scope not very good? I already have 2 decent pairs of binoculars, my dads old pair of Bushnells and a pair of Bushnells I got from work as a recognition gift. For a small set they work good, just a little uncomfortable.

No, they are fine. You will want a few different ones to do special viewing. Just take your time and add as you can. As for the binoculars , I have a pair that are older than I am. They too were my dad's .

Again thanks for the responses, this is a big a investment for something I really know nothing about. So to start I would like to keep the original cost down. I have looked into eyepieces, and will be buying some more down the road. The XT8 from KW telescopes has a beginners package that comes with some books and a Barlow x2 is that a good package to go with? It's only about $20 more and was going to get it.

AbbN, funny you should comment I was reading your post in the sticky "were to buy a telescope in Canada" and was wondering if you were still around on the forum. I was thinking about PM'ing you to ask you about astronomy mechanics in Barrie, and why you chose them over KW telescope.

Oh I'm still here and I intend to be for a looooong time Astro Mechanics went out of business years ago. I found KW Telescope after they went under. With KW I dealt strictly with Brian who is one of the co-owners and I've had nothing but excellent service from them
