What about this place in Burnaby Brandon Optics - Canada Telescopes, Rifle Scopes, Binoculars, Spotting Scopes and Night Visions
They sure have a wide selection on their website. Looks like all full MSRP though.

I deal with a couple of places in Ontario. Focus Scientific in Ottawa and Ontario Telescopes and Accessories in Bolton. I have also purchased from Lire La Nature in Longueuil, Québec.

This was a great little store. The staff were excellent, took the time to talk with you, and earnestly seemed to try and know you. Never tried to up-sell. Great customer service.
I was in the store just days before they closed. Landlord was there, and things seemed a bit weird but Harout was his usual friendly self. In hindsight...

There are a lot of small businesses getting the squeeze in Vancouver these days. Largely unreported, there has been a massive foreign investment in commercial real estate past couple years and still on-going. Lots of new landlords without roots in the city. Knock on effect is sky rocketing land-value assessments driving tax increases and many small businesses can't afford to stay when their lease expires. Toxic environment really for a telescope store, ignoring the more general plight of brick and mortar stores these days. Vancouver is undergoing crazy change all round. Can't make a go selling telescopes, but the Ferrari and Bentley dealerships are doing great. It seems the future of Vancouver is retail stores catering to the international wealthy, and dollar stores.

While it sucks to have had stuff on order at VTC that probably won't turn up (and I was one, although it was small $$ value), I have trouble thinking Harout purposely took customers money knowing the store wouldn't deliver. Probably he was just trying to be optimistic about the situation and keep doing sales. I would guess things fell apart quicker than expected for the staff.

Best wishes to all staff of VTC.

I've since had some minor communication with Harout ... no real detail.

I do get the sense that the decision was made by the majority owner to stop throwing good money after bad ... & to stop short of bankruptcy/receivership.

I believe they'll honour prior commitments to customers ... take no more new business ... & then vacate the premises.

As MikeBC pointed out ... too many small businesses going under at lease renewal. Too many hard working people paying the price through lost employment.

I hope all concerned bounce back to bigger & better futures.

How they liquidate existing inventory remains to be determined I'd guess. I suppose this week will determine a few more answers.

Believe me, it makes the news here, too. Toronto is not far off from Vancouver. Getting sold out by our own. And with the current leadership, it's just going to get worse. Money talks, unfortunately.
    Best of luck,

I met with Harout, the store manager of 15 years or so, yesterday.
He & the other 2 staff members were busy vacating the store.
It's Harout's intent to meet with customers with outstanding orders & make sure that those orders are fulfilled ... once the dust settles. Probably the middle of next week.
He's been the 'face of the franchise' over the years, so-to-speak, & feels that his honour & reputation are at stake ... & will be working hard to fulfill prior commitments & to maintain the trust of his customers.
One lady came in & picked up her order while I was there & there looked to be 3 or 4 other orders waiting to be picked up as well.
I'll be meeting with him again next week to complete my order.

I'm in a bit of a tough situation with Vancouver Telescope Centre. I dropped off a Skywatcher BK MAK150 OTAW, Skywatcher BK 100ED and a Skywatcher HEQ5 mount in August for a consignment sale. I tried checking in a few times by phone and email on how things were going and never actually got a reply. I finally decided to go down there in person last week and found the store was empty and being renovated. I'm obviously concerned that nobody told me to come pick up my gear before they closed. I hope you're right that they're going to be contacting people but the fact that the store is now being renovated makes me think they're going to screw me. I've emailed a couple times this last week and got no reply so I'm feeling skeptical.

In the first week of January I was looking to exchange/upgrade my ED80/EQ3 Synscan purchase to ... coincidentally ... an ED100 & EQ5 tripod [no Synscan].

No mention was made of your equipment nor was it demo'd to me to show me what I'd be looking at ! I'm awfully sure that it wasn't there.

I tried to PM you but I think your new membership status doesn't permit it.

Quite sad, really. But hey, there's always Astrobuysell.com ...

    Mark

Or Kijiji, Craigslist, LetGo.... if you're the type who wants to pick up other people's leftovers ....

In the Toronto area you still have Durham Skies too.....

I was a bit disappointed that Vancouver Telescopes chose not to continue as an online store. But then with online stores the climate is not necessarily easier: your competition is global, or the entire Canada at least.
