What part of Vancouver Island, Kevin? The Victoria chapter of RASC and the Cowichan Valley Starfinders are the two main groups on the island. Both hold star parties in the summer, at Metchosin and Duncan, respectively.

I used to live on Denman Island, near Courtenay/Comox.

If anyone is coming through Kamloops, drop me a line just got my first scope meant for imaging. While I don't have a lot of time to meet with others, it never hurts to try! Plus, I'm sure you all would kill for my

It seems to me that there was a group of about half a dozen guys who'd meet in Comox. I found them via an out of date, unmaintained web page, but apparently they were still operating when I contacted them. However there was always the issue of getting home in time for the last ferry, so I never actually met up with them. My main contact with other astronomers was at the Cowichan Valley Stargazers' Island Star Party.

Really? That is quite the coincidence, because I literally thought I may have written your post for a second! Me: also an adult AM-astronomer, living in north vancouver. Caught the Astro bug hard about 15 months ago. Wonder what the odds are that we know each other?

    Hi All,
I too am in the Vancouver area, started down this road this spring when I acquired a decent 6" dob that I've since mounted to an HEQ5 and a smaller 114mm astromaster bird-jones newt that I've just mounted to a Celestron LCM mount I picked up for a song, I've been trying a bit of everything so far I've done some planetary and DSO imaging, got a decent pic of Saturn but the DSO thing is proving to be a bit of a learning curve... I've also developed a habit of trying to image the iss transiting various bodies but my only success so far has been a white light image of with the sun, I've recently found some great software packages that allow me to track satellites and want to try my hand at imaging them. I haven't had a chance to make it out to a starry night yet up at SFU but am trying to arrange my schedule to soon. It's nice to see a few other people around this area that have been bit by this bug around the time as me, I hadn't thought about Seymour for observing but that's an awesome idea if anyone is planning another trek that way I'd be interested in a possible meet up, any way just thought I'd say hi and introduce myself, so Hi

In Vancouver you have the RASC that meet at Vanier Park(sp?) and quite a few people that go up Hollyburn to the mid-level parking lot/park. SFU has an observatory that people go to quite often (weekly?).

In Abbotsford you have the Fraser Valley Astronomy Club that do their viewings at McDonald Park which is zoned as a dark sky preserve. They actually have their own little viewing area fenced off at one end of the park. a LOT darker than anything in Vancouver but still not really a "dark" sky.

There is also the Merritt Astronomical Society (an offshoot of the FVAS folks) that hold a 9 day star party near Merritt every year and that is a DARK sky. If you are a MAS member (automatic if you attend or you can just sign up) you can also camp at the dark site when you like. Several people go up there for weekend viewing at various times. Its just a gravel pit although you can always camp at Kentucky Alleyne provincial park and drive the 15 minutes to and from the pit if you want a bit more comfort.

    Hi, I am in PoCo.
Was gifted an old Bushnell 78-8876 76mm GoTo - yeah. I am learning its entry level and problematic. Am interested in learning more.
    Cheers
