Default Calgary Fireball June 11th 2012?

    Hello,

I discovered this forum after seeing something very strange last night at about 11pm (MST) in Calgary, Alberta. Basically it was a white fireball with a tail, in the SW section of the sky. The entire thing lasted less than a few seconds but it was extremely bright (so much that I thought it was a misfired firwork, but I live in a residential area and the object was completely silent) It had a fairly long tail and simply disintigrated about 200 meters above the treeline.

What's even more strange is that there was a helicopter that showed up and circled around the general area about 2min after it dissapeared. I've sat on my deck a dozen times smoking my cigar and have never seen anything like this before. If anyone knows what it could have been, I'd be really happy to know.

I did not see anything like that, but I went inside just before 11. What part of the city did you see it from? NW, SW,..?

    Welcome to the forum.

I can't tell you what you saw. If it was a freball, and it sounds like it might have been, you have seriously under-estimated its height. At 200m, you would certainly have heard it. The helicopter may have been a coincidence.

I could have certainly been wrong about the height. I honestly never had an interest in the night sky before this beyond being a passive observer and could have mistaken the objects brightness for proximity if that makes sense. I'm in the SW.

    Neek,

Thank you very much for posting that link. Aside from the country and time of day, as well as number of objects seen (I only saw one) that was an almost synonymous experience. The best way I can describe it is like a shooting star, but up close. It was bright, had a tail being led by a fireball and was gone very quickly. I can honestly say that it wasn't an atmospheric disturbance as proposed in that other thread that I've ever heard about. It literally manifested and vanished in an instant, with the rest of the sky surrounding it being dark.

Did you happen to notice if it was a military helicopter? Perhaps a flare fired (or misfired) from the copter. That would explain his presence in the area and possibly checking for resulting fire.
