  1. Problems, problems...

I've been having serious problems getting everything to align/track properly. Eventually I traced the root cause to a balance problem. Basically, with the Samsung camera on the N6SE I couldn't get the scope to balance properly in RA. The setup is far too camera-heavy. I tried to locate some counterbalance weights for the N6SE but they have been out of stock in the UK for months. In desperation I ordered an ADM dual saddle (vixen/losmandy) replacement for the saddle/puck on the HEQ5.

  2. Tiny update...

Still cloudy here. Installed new wall clock and walkie-talkie to house from AstroShed so I can order espresso (only joking!).

Play & Charge kit for the Xbox controller has arrived so I can try that tonight to see if it cures the "10 minute disconnect" problem.

The shed survived its first medium strngth downpour last night and I'm mightily relieved that it is waterproof.

  3. ... and finally, the Astro Shed!

    by , 08-11-2012 at 11:07 AM
Thanks to a prompt delivery on Thursday morning coupled with fantastic weather, my long-suffering wife and I were able to erect the shed and I spent Friday sorting out cabling and setting up the equipment.

I'd already sorted out the electrics which were easy since there was already an existing supply for my pond and tool shed/workshop nearby.

I finally fixed a long standing problem with my JMI focusser (intermittant operation in one direction, caused by a ground loop ...

  4. The long and winding road...

Nothing much to report yet. I've been rather distracted by the 100% cloud cover :-(

However, on the equipment front things are progressing nicely. I have been able to test the SCB-4000 with the Meade 0.33FR and I can achieve focus. All the software is checked and working and I'm all ready to go as soon as the clouds clear.

I've built a wooden tripod dolly (a T-shape) with large locking industrial wheels that my HEQ5 Pro is strapped to. I can wheel this in and out of ...

  5. Very quiet - shrouded in cloud!

    by , 07-20-2012 at 11:54 AM
Nothing to report yet - I'm all ready to go with testing the SCB-4000 but the clouds have been solid for the last 2 months :-(
I've just ordered a Meade series 4000 F3.3 focal reducer to use exclusively with the SCB-4000... this should give me another "stop" of light to play with which is equivalent to doubling the integration time (over the 6.3 I already have for DSLR AP).

The forecast for tomorrow looks "not too bad" so I will have to wait and see (or ...
