My Photoshop Workflow

I put together my photoshop processing workflow after watching and reviewing a number of online tutorials and videos. the majority of these steps can be found @ astrobackyard.com. you can use this workflow and follow along with one of Trevors vidoes.

Photoshop Processing Workflow


IMAGE STAMP
Use Crtl-Shift-Alt+E to create an image layer above the selected layer. This is a combined image of all previous visible layers. It provides a corrected histogram. You can then create a levels or curves layer to adjust for color balance with a histogram that isn’t so jaggy.



1 IMAGE PREP
• Crop. Bring the image into PS and crop at minimum 5% to remove stacking artifacts. This helps with histogram correction.
• Convert to 16-bit image and use exposure and gamma without adjustment

Save the file as V1

2 WHITE BALANCE
Create IMAGE STAMP and name as step name.
• Adjust white balance
• Open threshold adjustment layer
• Adjust the slider to get a good mix of black and white
• Use a 5x5 color sample and place a point in a black area
• Delete the threshold layer
• Find a star for a white color sample. Use a blue star if no g2v stars are available.
• Create a level adjustment.
• Adjust individual levels until they are aligned in the black around 20
• Create a second level adjustment layer
• Adjust individual levels until they are aligned in white @ 248.
• If overall star color is too red the wrong star was selected as the white point. Adjust red midpoint as necessary.

3 CURVE STRETCHING
Create IMAGE STAMP and name as step name.
Start stretching curves. Use two or more curve stretches to increase faint detail.
Adjust color after stretch to keep close to 20-30 black and 248 white. Change the red green and blue channels in the curve to adjust colors after each stretch. Alternatively use Levels in same way to keep color balance.
1. Midpoint stretch. Grab the middle of curve line and pull up and left a modest amount.
2. S-Curve. Create traditional S-Curve
3. Repeat midpoint and S-Curve until satisfied.
4. Attempt a color adjustment curve. New adjust layer curves change blending mode to color. Set black point dropper. Pick g2v star. Set white point dropper.


4 RC-Astro Gradient removal
Create IMAGE STAMP and name as step name.
• Use the lasso tool and select the object with 55 feathers.
• Selected the inverse
• Run RC-Astro.
• Typical settings - Med med background balance off.

Save the file as V2

5 COLOR BOOST
Color Adjustment
Create IMAGE STAMP and name as step name.
Add a color layer using DeepSkyColor(RGBC)
Create a copy of the previous layer (Original) and name RGBC.
Change layer type to color. Run DeepSkyColor and adjust colors. Typically remove red, green or both slightly (cocoon nebula) .87 .96 1.0
Merge RGBC back to the original.

Create IMAGE STAMP and name as step name.
Color saturation
• Select color range.
• Pick the nebulous area with the eyedropper and adjust the slider until only the subject area is selected.
• Create a new adjustment layer. Layer new adjustment layer hue saturation.
• Use small adjustments. Typically less than 10 in saturation. Rarely change Hue.
• Repeated the above process for different parts of nebulous. (Veil red and blue)

Vibrancy.
• Select color range.
• Pick the nebulous area with the eyedropper and adjust the slider until only the area is selected.
• Create a new adjustment layer. Layer new adjustment layer Vibrancy.
• Use small adjustments. Typically less than 10 in saturation and vibrancy.
• Repeated the above process for different parts of nebulous. (Veil red and blue)


6 NOISE REDUCTION
Create IMAGE STAMP and name as step name.
Save file as V3 and flatten.
Astronomy tools. Create a copy image layer for each action.
• Space reduction.
• Deep space noise reduce.
• Blotch reduction.
New color balance layer. Check the color and use curves or levels to balance.

7 SHARPEN
Create IMAGE STAMP and name as step name.
Filter sharpen UN sharp mask Amount 100% radius 2 threshold 6
Astronomy tools fade sharpen to mostly lighten if dark halos were created.

8 MINIMIZE STARS
Create IMAGE STAMP and name as step name.
Phase 1
• Select color range
• Select highlights or sample colors with the eyedropper and pick a star.
• Zoom into a star.
• Select modify expand until the star and halo are selected.
• Filter another minimum.

Phase 2
Create a new layer for phase 2 Minimize Stars.
• Make stars smaller action
• Enhance DSO and reduce stars action (Create a new layer for this action. After action use eraser and remove star field as the action has a tendency to create a color cast across the entire image.)

9 SMOOTHING
Create IMAGE STAMP and name as step name.
• Less crunchy more fuzzy action

10 Selective sharing
Create IMAGE STAMP and name as step name.
Create a sharpened layer. Copy smoothing layer above the sharpened layer. Using the eraser brush to reveal only those areas that you want to sharpen. Areas like the border between deep sky and nebula. Stay away from stars.
• New filter sharpens smart sharpen. In preview zoom into the nebula and adjust for detail in the nebula.
Amount 150-200
Radius 1.8
NR 5-10 %

Create a copy of the previous layer SMOOTHING and place above selective sharp layer. With a soft layer (top) selected use eraser tool to reveal the sharpened area.

11 Selective Smoothing
Use the same process as above substituting a noise reduction filter for the sharpen layer
Filter noise reduction reduces noise
Strength 10 preserve details 90 color noise reduction 25 sharpen none

Final Adjustments

Add luminance layer
Place the black and white mask into the layer and change type to luminous. Adjust as desired.
