I would like to write an introductory astronomy book as well, targeted at beginners, but I feel like I haven't quite honed my skills enough as an observer to be a real authority. Thinking of guys like Patrick Moore and James Muirden gives me inspiration, but it's probably not a standard that I will ever be able to reach.
I don't think you necessarily need to be super-knowledgeable to write a beginner book but (in my case) I wrote most of the relevant knowledge I DID have and presented it as well as I could.

I've read many good beginner books but they all try to do too much in one volume!
