My year end gift to myself was an unusual pair of Steiners to add to my growing collection. Red coatings are associated with cheapos that are considered verboten. While Firebirds are near the bottom of the Steiner food chain the red coatings are said to be functional as developed by Steiner for specialized use. The red coating is said to wash out greens and other colors in the wild allowing wildlife to "pop out". It also is said to penetrates haze and mist. Folks who use these binoculars report that they do what was intended. Red coatings appeared on cheap binoculars imitating Steiner without any benefit other than looking cool.

In the coming days I will be testing these binoculars in all light and weather conditions. In full strong light I am anticipating lots of glare. There is a strong blue hue as it is which does not bother me as the optics are otherwise bright and crisp. Finding the sweet spot for these in more inclement conditions will be fun. I also have to wonder about Astro use. More later.
