Default Collimating A Pair of Barska 15X70 Binocs

    Hello,

My Barska 15X70 binoc's left and right eye images don't seem to align well enough for my brain to assemble them into one clear image. Does this mean they need collimating and has anyone done this before? If so, are there any "gotchas" I should be aware of, or is there a preferred instructional video that you have found?. I hate re-inventing the wheel!!!

Thanks for any help that is offered.

    Cheers and clear skies,
    JT

    Hi Scott,

Thanks for the video, it pretty much covered all I needed to know. There is only one small problem, on the Barska X-Trail 15X70 binocs, the prism set screw is hidden by the rubber armor exterior. There does not seem to be any visible way of getting to that set screw without doing damage to the exterior. I'll do more investigating as I now have a pretty good handle on what I'm doing.

    Thanks again and clear skies,
    JT

Yeah, unfortunately some binos with "water-resistant" coatings have no easy way to get to the collimation screws. When I repaired my Olympus DPS I's I had to (carefully) cut the rubberised coating along the join on the inside and peel it back. I glued it back up with silicone. See: Olympus binos collimated!

    Good luck!

    Dean

    Hi Dean,

Thanks. I did find a Barska white paper on collimating their binocs, and yes, you do have pry up the rubber coating to get access to the set screw. Is this maybe a case of the optical engineers not talking with the mechanical engineers? Or do we blame the program manager? Anyway thanks for pointing that out.

    Cheers and clear skies,
    JT

The good part is that you can't see the repaired join unless you know what to look for, and they have been fine ever since the repair.
