    Hi Sjd

    Welcome to the forum

Mate I have got to say that I haven't been to Melbourne for about 30 years, so I can't recommend an actual shop as such, but I will suggest that you should avoid shops that are not specialist astronomy suppliers.

For example, don't go to the camera shops, D!ck Smith or similar, or the department stores. They really do tend to almost always sell junk.

You can also Google for Australia Telescopes etc for sale.

will be releasing the coupon code for the site, let me know by pm if you are ordering as the coupon makes a good difference on the price.

Will be automatically showing the coupon code soon to active Australian members somewhere on the forum, and/or by newsletter.

Please note the site is secured by 256-bit code, and has https secured area for ordering. Currently the store processes payments are handled for now mainly by Paypal which is one of the best methods of paying online (much better than giving out your details to a store).

Should be 100% up and running to the general public soon - ie store stock, links etc.

    Hey Sjd-wth,

I've been shopping for a beginner telescope as well. It's a pretty daunting task for a complete newbie like myself since there are so many options available. I can't really offer any real advice except do your research before putting down any cash, there's a wealth of information on the internet so you can make sure you get what's right for you.

I think the general consensus among those in the know is that a dobsonian mounted reflector telescope offers new-comers the most bang for their buck.

I found this site with some pretty reasonably priced dobs. They have a store in Camberwell so you can check out the scope before you buy and save a little on postage.

    Bintelshop

Edit: Oops, just noticed OP was made in 2008. Oh well maybe someone else will find this information helpful.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Forum!
Bintelshop is definitely a place to visit. They have a shop in Melbourne, too. Even if you don't buy from them (they are not the cheapest ones) you will be able to see the stuff and talk to the guys. They are very friendly. And the shop has specials occasionally. Admin's advice must be taken to consideration too - it's a rare opportunity.
