    Default Orion Telescopes and Binoculars

    A bit of a love/rant post.

I Love Orion Telescopes and Binoculars! I wish they retailed here in Australia! Who's with me on this one?

Since we hardly have any astronomy based stores here anyway.

I also wish you had better access to astronomy equipment there and prices weren't so high. It sure doesn't help our hobby. My buddy Bob down there has told me about your difficulties and I feel for all of you.

One of those what comes first, more access to equipment may increase the number of people who purchase the equipment, but without places to buy the equipment you don't have much of a way to increase demand.

Bintel in Sydney sell some Orion scopes eg. the ST80. Have a look here https://www.bintel.com.au/product-ca...pes/refractor/
Their service is pretty good. I have a couple of astronomy based stores near me that are also good (Ozscopes and Optics Central) but neither stocks Orion scopes, although I think they can order one in for you. I stand to be corrected by perhaps Ozman that Skywatcher and Saxon are made by the same company and my Saxon ST80 looks identical to the Orion, apart from the colour.

    Cheers

The ST80 is manufactured by Synta (well, the doublet is) who market products under 'Sky-Watcher'. Orion rebrand a lot of Synta products. I don't know about Saxon but the odds are it's Synta.

Orion don't supply the ST80 now apparently but there is a Meade 80mm equivalent that many claim is Synta made. I'm a bit sceptical about that myself as I just can't see Ningbo Sunny buying from a competitor. I'd wager it's a clone with a JOC made doublet. Almost certainly just as good.

Orion and Sky-Watcher products are available in the UK, although Orion are a bit more expensive compared to their Sky-Watcher equivalents.

You can also poke around on Alibaba where you will find many familiar Orion items minus the brand name. You have to be careful about the widely varying quality control issues, but these are pretty well identified in the various forums, so you quickly find a consensus opinion on most of the common models. Some Chinese middlemen offer interesting small quantity promotional distributions as low as 4 units if you can find 3 other Australians to go in with you on a purchase. Some factories will also send a "sample" item if you can persuade them that you are a serious potential customer.

This is a popular 80mm 3 element APO widely used for astroimaging:

There are several ED semi-APO doublet refractors available from different suppliers with different focusers, finder options, and mounting rings:

These 2 speed Crayford focusers are a nice upgrade for many scopes:

Thanks for the heads up guys, I recently have bought and now own a Saxon 10 inch Dob from Optics Central.
    Serves me well.

I'm thinking to perhaps paint it in one of Orions colours down the line.

Synta is the same company that makes Skywatcher, Saxon and Orion.

I didn't know that Optics central can import Orion scopes?
