    Default Western Oz

    Hi folks,

I'm interested to know how much of an Australian presence is on these forums, specifically WA? I've recently joined the forums here and so far am loving the community as a whole, however as is mostly the case it appears to be predominately American/European.

I've searched a bit online and have been unsuccessful in locating any Astronomy clubs (outside of the Perth area), I'm currently out in Kalgoorlie where the viewing on most nights in the warmer months (obviously) is superb. Lately it has been slightly cloudy though it does usually clear right up by 9-10pm. I've got myself a great Semi-Rural viewing location, though I'm thinking of scouting one even further away from town to get a sought after Dark-Dark sky.

    Hi,

I'm an Aussie.....yay Although I'm based in NSW - sorry. Sounds like you're in a great location for observing our skies and being remote will unfortunately limit club involvement. However, I can't see anything wrong with those of us who are "local" in the forum (in AUS) actually using this forum to talk more about what we're up to and what we're seeing in the Southern Hemisphere. I'd be happy to chat with you or any one else about my upcoming astronomy plans or whether I've just walked outside to swear at the Aussie clouds.

Another option is to start our own mini club

I've have noticed the same thing with the US/Euro community presence in this forum, however, it's the ability to reach out to people with some serious astronomy knowledge that I'm really appreciating.

    Hello Camknox

I am located in Perth hills and one day hope to finish building my 20 inch. (Approximately six months away)

By the way, I have just joined this forum and am finding the adverts off putting. Is it worth persevering with it?

    Regards
    Doug

The ads go away completely after 50 posts. I got my count up reasonably quickly by checking out people's pictures and congratulating them etc. It goes by fairly quickly that way.

The people here seem friendlier and have a wider knowledgebase than IIS, though I guess the final call would be yours.

    Cheers,

    Cameron.

I'm in NSW so welcome from a few hours ahead.
This forum is different to IIS as it seem to have vastly more introductory posts and lots of questions about very cheap scopes. There is certainly some Aussie input and I haven't noticed any flaming.
Visit both and see which you like or use both.

    Hi Cam,
welcome! would be a good idea to start a WA or greater Perth astronomy group here.

There was a nice thread on a star fest you just missed:

    Astrofest WA Perth (March 31 2012, 5:30pm to 9:30pm)

    Thanks Cameron and Terry
My message about the value of this astronomyforum is that I don't want to end being a astroforum tragic like someone I know who is a member of at least half a dozen forums and scans them daily for postings.

    Hi Cameron

I checked out list of societies on the ASV web site and could only find the one in WA.
Sure there are a few other members out west. My brother(and family) is north of Kalgoolie at a mining site, but he doesn't have a scope (yet).

I am on both this and IIS and find the two compliment each other. Very friendly here and a lot more actively online.
The Perth society may be like the ASV in Melbourne we have a lot of country members. Send them an email and ask ?

I thought WA was part of Indonesia??? LOL

Nice to have you aboard. I don't sadly have any idea of Astro clubs in WA, though I know there are one or two. Your skies must be excellent so far from civilisation LOL...
