    Default New Design?

Maybe this is whack, but would it be possible to make a scope that was designed like a Herschel Newtonian with a objective lens?

You could, but would you want to? The herschel design was made to remove the need for a secondary mirror, because the mirrors in those days weren't very good. Mirrors are pretty decent now, so it's not much of an issue.

Apart from that, the herschel design introduces distortion I think.

I was thinking that a objective lens would partly correct that, but is that not true?

From my (not very good) knowledge of this design, you have the main mirror on an angle. That lets you basically stand directly in the light path and observe, with only a single light bounce (improving the image massively if your mirrors are bad, which they were back then) and no mirror obstruction to reduce the effective aperture.

Thinking it through a bit more though, with a refractor you don't have anything blocking the light path. You don't have multiple light bounces - just the objective, and then your eyepiece. You could put the objective lens at an angle, or use a wedge shaped piece of glass to bend the light, but the only thing you'd gain is a crooked version of a normal refractor.

Or am I missing something there? (Quite likely )

Ahhh . . . Forgot that twist to the Hershel design.
All of the good designs have been used up, eh?
