Default DIY Dobsonian for Astromaster 130

A few years back i got a Celestron scope with a big unweildly tripod that took all the fun out of stargazing, just getting the whole thing into the garden without tipping it over or damaging something was hard. I decided to give it a new chance with a new mount, a dobsonian.

I used a piece of 10mm MDF board, some hot-glue a two sewarpipe endcaps, and i think it worked out rather well. Two things im thinking about now is do i need to paint it? And how should i do with the rotation? As it is now, it has no bearing or bushing for rotation.

Well done Sir! Gotta love those sewerpipe endcaps And the fact that it's a lot more stable, I bet.
I had the same type of thing, though with an old Tasco. For the base bearing, I used an old 33 1/3 rpm record (the black circle in the second and third pic) and some self adhesive furniture sliders. Screw the record into the base, and put the sliders under the part that the scope is on. For feet, I found that three bicycle brakes worked well.

I'll probably get laughed at, but this has been working great for me for the better part of three years. As for the coating, it's marine spar varnish. Keeps boats sealed in salt water; should keep the moisture off the base

All the best, hope this helps, and nice job!

Good luck for the base an old VCD or old 33rpm record will work but dont junk the CG3 mount , also replace the finder its not good on that scope, perhaps why you did not like it

Looks stable but low to the ground, are you going to put it on an elevated base?

    Hi again Karl,
My explanation may have not been the best, so I took a minute and took my base apart for some pics for you:
    Base_1.jpg Base_2.jpg

The second pic is how I keep the tube from getting whacked on the front board. It's a piece of bicycle wheel inner tube, held on by 2 pieces of old aluminum (read weightless ) window frame. Keeps the mirror from being jolted.

    Have a great day,

I second that, it might be a better solution after all.

Thanx for the help! I intend to have the telescope on a small table in my back yard, but i could see the lack in height beeing an issue if it was brought to a field and used by someone taller than 45cm

The finder is really poor, i will have an eye out for a better one!
