    Default P-Mount Build (plywood)

I'm kicking off a P-Mount build and thought I'd post the progress. Mostly 3/4 (23/32) Ply with DIY Oak dovetails and Oak dowels for pivot pins (1" & 5/8"). Lots of tight cuts so there'll be a lot of sneaking up on dimensions and back checking with a micrometer. I see it as ambitious but I've got the tools and "nothing ventured ..." and all that. It'll mount on a Celestron basic Alt/Az tripod with a 1/4-20 threaded insert.

I didn't include all the dowel parts (vertical pivot shaft, counterweight bar pin, etc.)in the pic and I still have to include some tension adjustment points to complete. The Cut Plan came out to a little over a third of a full sheet of Plywood (US dim's 48" x 96") that I have on hand on my lumber cart.

I plan to start cuttin' and gluein' this weekend.

Sounds like a fun project! Nice drawing btw.

You will be quite surprised at jut how heavy that mount will be and it will seem like it is going to rip the head off that tripod! So be gentile

Yeah, I'm with you, there. It'll break down into three pieces so it'll be a little easier to handle. I tried to keep the vertical moment arm at the tripod head to a minimum. Hope that helps.

I agree... I bet the final weight will be close to 30 lbs, which might just be too much for the mount.
    3/4" Ply is very heavy.
Aluminum box tubing would do a nice job at about 25% of the weight.
(I know the point is the woodworking, but did you know you can work most Al just like wood?)
Oak is a lot tougher on tools than Al is... Just a suggestion.

Pictures! Lots of pictures! We like images....
    Good Luck!

    **edit** Found this...

    – Hardwood plywood typically weighs around 55 lbs. per 3/4-in.-thick sheet. Utilityplywood can be much heavier, however. A 3/4-in.-thick sheet of BC fir plywood, for example, can weigh more than 70 lbs.

    Yup.

Just did a quick area check in SU. Came to about 5.6 SqFt. using 60 Lb per sheet @32 SqFt per sheet the Ply portion should be ~ 10.7 Lb.

Add to that the counterweight and the bino's (Skymaster 15x70's)

    It'll be tricky, no doubt.
