Default Alternative to the Celestron SkyPortal WiFi Adapter

I am looking at the Celestron SkyPortal WiFi unit currently selling for 163 GB Pounds at David Hinds in the UK, for use with a goto telescope such as the 127 SLT. An alternative remote control option would an USB-to-RS-232 cable setup via the control handset and Stellarium but has anyone considered another RS-232-based WiFi solution?

Amazon UK sells an RS-232-to-WiFi adapter box for under 34 GB Pounds. This would allow the standard Celestron RS-232 cable to be connected to a wifi network and, in theory, allow for Stellarium driven control without long USB-to-RS-232 extenders.

Does anyone have any experience of using such a setup? I think it would work in principle but do not know the limitations of, or requirements for the goto controller interface. If it did work it would save around 100 GBP for the same end result.

The Astronomy Shoppe near me has this Bluetooth interface:

I know it's Bluetooth and not WiFi, but it seems to offer the same remote control as you are seeking.

    Good luck!

That RS232 wifi module looks very interesting, haven't seen them before could be useful for me to control my Meade LX90..

I use a bluetooth adaptor that I got from US Converters. There is a little bit of configuration, but it it's not too hard. Your link does not work so I can't look at the one you are, but I'm sure it's similar.

I use it with Sky Safari.

Thanks - I like this because it has an internal battery and my solution needed a 5v power supply. Grateful for the information. I thought it must be possible to achieve remote control without paying Celestron money.

Thanks to everyone who commented. Plenty to think about...
