Default Tube rings for a 60mm scope

I've got an old Vixen 60mm F11.7 refractor that used to see service as a guide scope in the days of film. Being a scrooge who does not like throwing stuff out I want to re-purpose it as a terrestrial scope. But it used to be mounted in guide rings that are not really suited to that purpose and 60mm tube rings are impossible to come by.
Puddling around in eBay I came across some "Tripod Mount Rings" designed for some sort of Canon telephoto lens. They are described as 64mm ID which is near enough for m,; plus they have a 1/4" threaded hole in the foot, so I ordered a pair. They were a bit loose so I went and got some adhesive backed green felt of the kind used for furniture. Cut it into strips and added it to the inside of the rings.
A perfect fit so the old scope gets a reprieve.

My very first telescope was a 60mm from Sears.

That`s so odd; I was looking at the exact same thing on ebay yesterday. Looks like it worked out well for you; good to know. 60mm parts are almost impossible to come by. There`s a guy selling focusers for them (1.25 at least) on ebay, too, but that`s it. I have this old Safari-brand(???) 60mm f15 that either A)I`ve put the lenses together backwards or B) it`s just that crappy of a scope. Probably B.

Anyways, thanks for that; good to know they work & nice scope, too!

    All the best,

    Mark

Equally odd. I was just over at CN on the Classic scopes forum and some else had used almost identical rings for their Vixen 60mm F15 scope. The 60mm scopes must be coming back into vogue.

Looks to be an almost perfect match for the mount also. Splendid job. Most of the 60mm scopes in the day were Alt/Az mounted, at least the majority. That's all anyone could afford back then. If it was EQ mounted it usually had a clam shell that was permanently part of the mount, thus rings are scarce.

The tripod and mount are from the 150mm Newt that the frac was the guider for. The newt is still seeing action on a more modern mount and tripod so the Super Polaris is now spare. The whole lot was a matching set with the Vixen greenish finish. One of these days I'd like to rework or replace the tripod with timber for aesthetics as befits a classic.
