I love my dobsonian and I love star hopping. Tracking my object, however, is a nuisance. It doesn't bother me much, but it is annoying when trying to view planets at high magnification. I decided to build me an equatorial platform for my dob.
I have spent quite a bit of time sifting through many pages trying to figure it out. I understand the math and the concept. I have even designed the platform except for a few details that I'm just going to have to figure out when I build it, like how much extra space on the base for the motor. My plan on those things is to leave more space than I think I need then trim later.
I'm not planning on doing photography with it, so I don't have to have everything perfect. Heck, I'd be happy if I get 5-10 minutes of tracking between nudges, but most people say they get 45-60 minutes of tracking and don't need to nudge the tube.
I plan on using this post so other people can see what I did in hopes they can learn from my successes and mistakes.
It is going to take me a while because I don't get a ton of time since I have so many other things I do with my free time. But have no fear, I will post pictures. I also plan on doing a step by step discussion of my process so other people can follow.
