Default DIY EOS Clip Inspired Filter Mount... 1.25", no vignette!

Well I've done it now.. LOL. I just spent all night working on developing a way to perfectly center a 1.25" filter over the area that the astronomik clip filters rest on. I was inspired by my CLS ccd and took out my calipers and started doing some measuring. After I got the dimensions down I realized that the EOS clip filters are more or less 1.25" filters in a different housing. I decided to cannibalize a 1.25" zhummel UHC filter and put it to the test and see if I could mount it flush over the EOS mirror. I measured the diameter of the zhummell filter with my calipers and divided by two to get the radius. I then measured the inside diameter of the camera and also measured the depth. I think the filter dimensions came out to 28mm, 42mm, and 3mm depth. It turns out that the left over black craft foam I had from a dew shield is 3mm thick. So I decided to take a compass and spread it out to the radius of my filter by aligning it over a plastic millimeter scale. I then sharpened the lead on the compass and used it to gently cut perfect circles in the craft foam. This took several tries as I found that even a 1mm error was detrimental to the setup. The tolerances have to be tight if you want to be able to image with a 1.25mm filter. When I finally got the foam cut out I seated the glass filter down into the bottom of the foam donut and ligned the top and bottom edges with adhesive vinyl dinoc. This allowed me to mount the filter perfectly flat and the tape keeps the filter from moving, also the top and bottom edges will not vignette if you do not exceed more than 7mm onto the filter, the astronomik filter actually partially covers the top and bottom as well. So now I have an EOS clip inspired filter mount and I'm going to try and beef up this design a bit more in the next week. I hope to find some 2mm foam and use a 1mm thick piece of plastic or aluminum cut on a lathe at school to reinforce the donut structure. As it is now it works fine, I even tested it with a lens, cloudy tonight so no astronomy. Just like an astronomik filter this will not work with EF-S lenses because those lenses actually fill the void that this filter holder takes up. So here are some pictures of the setup. I have been wanting to experiment with Ha for a while now without spending a truck load of money, I think it's feasible now. Be inspired!

test by LMNO Sunset Deluxe, on Flickr the camera is full spectrum infrared and it has the UHC zhummel filter on so that is why the image looks so crazy.

To complete this project you will need
    1 x 1.25" filter
    1 x spanner wrench
    1 x caliper
    1 x compass
1 x piece of craft foam from hobby lobby
tape or any adhesive that can seat the filter properly
    1x exacto knife
    and alot of patience

Oh and here is the empty housing for the zhummell filter, you need a spanner wrench to take apart a filter like this

Well, it is a 6 year old thread and the OP has not be online here in almost a year. Your best bet is to post a new thread and see if anyone can link to an image for you.
