where do you go to get the parts? If one is to take on a project like this then we need to be able to make a shopping list... right?

    Default Parts is Parts!

All of the parts used in this assembly are from my local "Orchard Supply Hardware Store". Only the Optics and mount are specialties.
The Optics were from a parted out 12" Meade Lx200 and the mount is currently a Meade LXD55 GEM.

Whereever you are all you need to do is locate a source for plywood, pvc pipe, nut&bolts and some fine stranded steel cable. The exact dimensions depend on the optics.

Getting a set of optics is the real challenge as they don't show up often.

    Regards,
    Leo

    Default Parts List?

If you feel it is useful, I can make up a parts list for the particular instrument I made, but do remember, some of the design decisions were dependent on what I could get locally.

So far, with 5 different versions of the focuser and 2 on the primary
OTA (since it's open frame is it really an OTA or an OFA?) I've spent about $200 USD.

One version of the focuser was with kitchen door weather stripping felt trapped between two PVC fittings in compression on the threaded focus rod. Cost <2.00 USD and worked just fine.

Much of this was just a "proof of concept" exercise so it continues to change. So far, I am really surprised at how well it actually worked out.

Sure I would like to learn more. Can you give me some good article or step-by-step instruction?

    Rajib,
I started by tearing down and rebuilding my Celestron C-8. Then I used this optics site:

    Amateur Telescope Optics

After that, I just worked everything out.

AFAIK, there is no article about just such an approach as I have taken.

Part of the drive behind doing this was to get the largest SCT I could and still be portable.

This whole scope breaks down in less than 1/2 hour and fits in several small boxes. Takes about 1-2 hours to re-assemble and re-align so is great for my small car.

    Default More PIX

I've posted a new shot of the scope setup, with a picture of the Theophilus region of the moon using the scope in my album (DrLeoB: 12"DIY-SCT).

I'm currently in the midst of making a 20" sct my question is how did you know or find out where to put the secondary mirror?
