    Default Hello - Possible solution to global warming

    Hello all,

    My name is Rui and I would like to share some thoughts.

    Solving the temperature increase in Earth could have a simple solution. Why not put a sheet of some resistant to radiation material between the Earth and the Sun?

    I am not an expert in astronomy, but I bet it would need a relatively small area and it would not be that hard to do. At least, easier than in 30 years, transform all the world energy system. So:

    1st – Does anyone have an estimate of how much radiation do we need to block from the sun to reverse, say, 1ºC from earth mean temperature?
    2nd – How much area would we have to block (imagine a wide sheet of material) from the solar irradiance, assuming the most direct route of radiation from the Sun to the Earth (right in front of the Sun!)?
    3rd – With that in mind, we should calculate the best stable orbit of the blocking sheet in a way to:
    - choose the best available material (Iron? Steel? Aluminium? Etc…);
    - minimize de quantity of material (probably the fast way to make the blocking sheet), taking into account the required thickness;
    - minimize interference with the Earth magnetic field.

    Carrying material to space is very expensive. We could use the moon to manufacture the materials to the blocking sheet. Although I really doubt this would be a feasible solution – it would require placing a whole manufacturing plant in the moon! As a reference, we have these main materials on the Moon:

    Lunar surface chemical composition[1]

    Compound Formula Composition
    Maria Highlands
    sílica SiO2 45.4% 45.5%
    alumina Al2O3 14.9% 24.0%
    lime CaO 11.8% 15.9%
    iron(II) oxide FeO 14.1% 5.9%
    magnesia MgO 9.2% 7.5%
    tit. dioxide TiO2 3.9% 0.6%
    sodium oxide Na2O 0.6% 0.6%
    Total 99.9% 100.0%

    There is a good image that show what place to go at the moon to retrieve the best composition we would like: wikipedia org/ wiki/ Geology_of_the_Moon

    Could we just melt any Moon ground and use it directly? Would it be hard enough and resistant enough to make a blocking sheet that could sustain the Sun radiation and stand the moving process?

    Just sharing some thoughts.

    Regards,

    Rui Carmo
