Thanks n_FA. Does this mean that any of Fomalhaut's planets are inside the ring. And, BTW, do you know what that red blob lower left is? Thanks.

Fascinating not_Fritz! Brings new meaning to Fomalhaut's designation as the "eye of the fish" by the ancients. I guess we are witnessing the apparent formation of planets around the star, accreting from the ring.

The paper ( https://arxiv.org/pdf/1705.05867.pdf ) IDs the object as a background galaxy.

After subtracting our best-fit belt model from the data, the resulting residuals do not show any evidence for significant azimuthal structure. The only significant peak visible to the east of the disk is attributable to a background galaxy. We do not confirm any of the azimuthal features, including the gap at 331◦ position angle, that have been seen in previous imaging studies with HST, SCUBA, and ALMA. However, we cannot rule out smaller structure 10 AU, which would be unresolved with the current resolution of our image.

Actually the paper further IDs the current stage of evolution of Fomalhaut as perhaps equivalent to the late heavy bombardment.

Here is a handy comparison of the structure of the Fomalhaut System with the Solar System.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:H..._Fomalhaut.jpg

The eccentricity of the ring indicates planet Fomalhaut b shepherds the ring from just inside the ring.

Hi N_fa I found it very interesting as it compares to our galaxy and could it not produce more planets around it as it looks quite young compared to us.They only found dragon in 2014 in its orbit around the central star. Thanks for the links.
