I saw this article on another site and considered posting, but I refrained.

I understand that this is just the measurement of a very large scale flow but I'm balking at what forces could be "pushing". Gravity is not repulsive. The statement that attractors are insufficient is no joy.

Is there some nonuniformity in dark energy?

I'm going to need to read the paper....

Thanks n_FA. I have learned form you and others on the forum to be a bit skeptical of all the info that is out there.

Here is another article on this work that might be of interest

    https://phys.org/news/2017-01-galaxy-space.html

Seeing that the original work was reported in Nature i despaired of getting behind the paywall.... BUT it never hurts to click and here is the full article with its analyses and arguments.

The dipole repeller : Nature Astronomy

This put my mind at considerable ease. No new strange forces are assumed. All work is done in the context of LambdaCDM cosmology, the concordance model.

So for from proposing a new very odd alternative gravity with repulsions, the "repulsion" described can be understood as driven dark energy expansion and differences in density between a relative void and an overdose region.

It looks like good work actually.

Is this a physical example of the Alcubierre drive?

No. That caught me by surprise!!! The Alcubierre drive cannot have a physical example since the conditions for its existence are not physically consistent.

A bubble of expanding spacetime "behind" you, and a gravity tug "in front". It's a lot like the principle of the Alcubierre drive.

(Few things give me more pleasure than tweaking a few of nFA's morning brain cells) heehheheehhehhehe

Oddly, this is actually part of the morning casual conversation in the office this morning. That caught me off guard.

I linked the Phys Org article to them. That ought to set their hair on fire.

I liken this to pushing on a rope. Gravity would not be responsible as was mentioned.

No bubble needed. Behind is just the usual space time expansion. Ahead is just slower expansion because of the over density of matter.

Alcubierre drives require negative densities not voids.
