    I don't see a "breakthrough" as a new "hope." The breakthrough will be when it is detected.

    The break through in the article is also buried by the article. It is a breakthrough in computational technique for calculating how colliding black holes behave and the resulting emission of gravitational waves. Without that purely computational breakthrough (and it is a tough enough problem to solve that breakthrough is good word, IMO) the detector would risk missing detecting gravitational waves. So it is a computational breakthrough that avoids and observational flub.
