    Default Earthquakes

I have a bought some software on my PC called EQ3D about 7 days back, I am really pleased with it, it runs well, but I am shocked at how earth is getting more Earthquakes as time goes on, eg on Weds we recorded about 60 in 24 hrs, Friday the number was 102, on Saturday the number was 142 in 24 hrs, today Sunday 29th April 2012 we had 153 in 24 hrs, yes the maj were low mag from 1.5 to 4.8 mag, but poor ole Japan had a few nasty 5.8 and 6.4 mag quakes.
Is the Moon doing this can anyone tell me?

The center here in CA is nearby at JPL. So far everything they have said publicly is that there is no cause/effect explanation. Logic and correlation are the basis of amatuer theories but the pros claim the statistics don't hold up. They don't see a pattern.

There is a pattern on any given fault line. Slippage in one area changes the stress along the line. That can affect the probability of a future slip along that line.

Think about this from a scientific point of view...

Is there any reason to suspect that the number of earquakes this week is any greater than the number this time last year? Is there any reason to think that an increase over four days is unusual? Is there any reason to suspect the moon as a culprit?

There are no correlations between Moon and Earthquakes. Moon is too small to affect the Earthquakes.

But there is may be correlations between blue moon (super moon) and eruptions of volcanoes. When eruption is ready, moon can a little bit trigger it.

Hello Keith, well I can reply to your question (Are there more this year) well indeed yes lots more, a mate who lives in LA told me that till this year the ave amount on Earthquakes per day was about 15 to 30 max.
This year just today the 30th April from 1AM to now earth has had 11 that is just 8 hrs, a few I have posted on my own forum, was going to on here but I was not sure if I was allowed to do it.
NORTH OF SVALBARD, NORTH INDIAN OCEAN,,OFFSHORE COQUIMBO, alone have had over 5 Mag today, out of the others too, so odd.

If anyone has an Iphone download (Free) a app called Quake Earth, it updates you each time with full Data.

what is your eartquake history like over, say, the past 7 years? One thing aslo to remember is that Earthquakes are being reported much more frequently. This does not mean there are more earthquakes, just that more are reported.

I think science needs to be on a more solid footing than "my friend told me." I frequently look at earthquake data from the USGS and Natural Resources Canada, and can see no significant increase in overall earthquake activity over the last several years.

I suspect that what you are seeing is the difference between having an iPhone app and not having one.

Quakes are relatively random over time. You have been looking at them for 7 days. but you are not alone there are a lot people who are sure the sky is falling because of what has been measured over the last 30-40 years since they got tools to measure it.
Problem is these things happen to the earth on a scale that is hundreds or thousands of years.

yes there is climate change.. it always does.. of course people are part of that.. what part we are.. that is an open question..

This happens when one takes a few years measurement out of cycle that be hundreds of years or more. This year the Bearing Sea ICE pack hit a new record HIGH by then 25% over average and 10% more than the previous record for the last 33 years. This is not the start of a new ice age

Its like walking into a casino and looking at the number board (which has increased roulette play and profits for casinos) on the roulette table and seeing that 17 has come up 3 times in the last 10 drops. Your mind assumes that means something so you start betting on 17, and it doesn't come up for an hour. Because over a many days the averages for the wheel will mean each number comes up about 1 in 37 times.
There are some small colorations to moon/tides and small events..

But there appears to be no other predictable effect, from other aspects like the small shift in moon distance etc.

The tidal action on the earth causes land to rise and fall about 3 feet in SoCal. That happens twice a day. Logic would lead one to think that is significant so it might affect earthquakes. But then consider that the top and bottom of a fault get about the same amount of motion. The whole crust rises and falls.

The dynamics of a volcano plume are less understood. The question relates to the tie between magma and mantle versus crust. Is the crust pulled from the mantle? With hot spot volcanos such as Kilaweaha it may have some effect.
