That is hard to say. There have been a lot of predictions that have just turn out plain wrong, most of those are due to an insufficient understanding of the universe at the time, rather that stupidity.

    Top candidates:

    Things like Epicycles
which came about because of the Geocentric model conflicted with observations.

    The planet Vulcan
Which was predicted because newtonian physics could not account for the precession of mercury's Perihelion.

    And Einsteins Cosmological constant
which was sort of stuck in ad hoc, because the current view at the time was the universe was in a steady state, though the cosmological constant has been revived in recent years.

Maybe ether? It was generally accepted that there was some kind of ether 100+ years back, then somebody did some experiments to measure how strong its effect was.. and noticed that there was no effect at all, because there is no ether

I don't know the right answer on this question. Just read article on Wiki Cosmological constant

A major outstanding problem is that most quantum field theories predict a huge cosmological constant from the energy of the quantum vacuum. This discrepancy 10^120 has been termed "the worst theoretical prediction in the history of physics!"
Just curios if there is such rating for astrophysics? Or, may be, we can vote for the worst astrophysical theory and create this list!

    Clear skies,
    Valentin

For no better reason than to reestablish equilibrium, I strongly disagree.

Assuming teacher asked you question on exam. You give him answer with discrepancy ten powers hundred or even more. Do you think you pass exam? But this is how the modern physic and astrophysics working now! The difference in prediction of cosmological constant was found in 1967 by Zeldovich and problem still not solved!

    The worst predictions?:

    1) The Weather Channel!
They couldn't predict a rainstorm if they were standing in the middle of the rainstorm!

    2) Nibiru 2012

OK, all kidding aside..... My answer would be the "Big Bang".....

I just don't buy the "whole" theory. All seems too easy. And, Yes, I know that the universe is expanding. I just don't buy the whole theory as explained by many scientists. And it's STILL just a "THEORY"..... hehe
