Processing Astrophotography Pictures with Background Light Pollution

I hope Blaise doesn't mind me using his wonderful photo here
    M51 From the Red Zone

    Before

    Tip #1:
Levels make the biggest difference in one click.
Just click only the black level dropper in Photoshop or GIMP (free! docs here:http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-levels.html), and click on your lighter areas. Then the background will go blacker, as you are telling the graphics editing software that that area is actually is supposed to be black!

    After

    Tip #2:
    Capture in RAW

    Tip #3:
Capture as many frames as you can

    Tip #4:
Turn the brightness up a bit, and the contrast up a lot more.

Hey Gus is there suppose to be a link in this post?
    Am just seeing a statement!!...

OK. I see the images. they never came with your post at first.
    Big difference.
Would you believe..I was thinking of doing a thread about how to reduce lp from images.
I am lucky I have cs4..but there is a lot of improvement using other post editing software.
    Nice job.

Since I need the practice anyway, I took the liberty of playing around with this image using GIMP. I'm still learning all of the ins and outs, so I'm sure in time I will be able to do an even better job. But this gives you an idea of what GIMP is capable.

Rub it in. After I "claimed" that it was impossible to extract anything useful from the picture you go and make a liar out of me...but I am glad you did : )

I have been working with Gimp for a couple of days now and I have pretty much achieved the same thing you have. Glad I have this forum to turn to.

Plenty of good tutorials on youtube for gimp (Pete turned me on to that one).

Good job, Gus. Thanks for providing pointers.

This was the most I could get out of the image using GIMP. If it had been a RAW image instead of a JPEG, I probably could have gotten a lot more out of the image.

Bet you didn't realize that there was so much there.

By the way, it might be useful for those who are visiting here who have never attempted astrophotography before to see what the beginning image looks like after stacking and before stretching, levels, and the like. I am attaching a converted RAW to jpg for convenience.

So then, attached is a result of 12 images. Each image is 3 to 4 minutes. Included in the final are 4 darks. Flat frames would have been useful for vignetting, but I didn't bother.
