    Hi Guys,

Many, many thanks to you all for offering your advice and guidance regarding my query - invaluable, and brilliant to know there's this amount of support out there for us beginners! Special thanks to Kathy (thank you!), who's first post got me thinking about my whole process and as a result I'm able to report that I think I've now cracked it!!

In the end, my dilemma was indeed all down to basic inexperience and misunderstanding on my part I fear - so if this may assist any one else struggling to get their head around how to start in this frustrating (sometimes) but thoroughly enjoyable (always!) subject, here's what I've been able to figure out and address, in order of my 'errors'. Forgive me for being a little verbose, but I thought I'd explain in reasonable detail in case it helps anyone else:

    - I hadn't fully appreciated or understood that the LRGB subs (plus respective darks, flats, etc.) needed to be run through DSS independently to each other, so creating a separate 'master' sub for each. Silly me, newbie error, pretty obvious once you think about it. Once they're done properly, the resultant LRGB images may then be combined in PS or whatever other processing software as required. Big 'Doh'!

    - On closer inspection, I discovered that the images I acquired previously were of completely rubbish quality! I think there was a haze or high light cloud or something at the time, and I didn't appreciate how much of an effect that would have had on the quality of the images - SGP's HFR readings show that most of the subs were in excess of HFR 12.0 !!!! This surely wouldn't have helped my processing quest!

    - I recall SGP had struggled a bit to obtain auto-focus upon each filter change during my first batch of subs, finally deciding to go with what it considered to be a 'best guess' I think even though I had entered what I believed to be 'correct' focuser settings - I'm presuming this must have been down to the aforementioned bad seeing/transparency? Anyway, I've now re-checked and carefully focussed each filter first with a Bahtinov mask and entered these data into SGP's focus settings per filter (as it happens, they weren't a million miles away from my original settings, but at least it's a more accurate starting point now). Another prime reason for my original subs being awful I now realise, i.e. slightly out of focus.

These separate, but obviously part of the 'complete picture' so to speak, problems were all conspiring to create my confusion.

Over the last few nights conditions have been very good here so I've taken a load more RGB subs (still need to re-do the L subs), run those through DSS (properly, this time!) and with HFR readings of these now showing worst case 3.0 (many below 2.0) loaded them into Photoshop for processing. I also have to say that adjusting the focus starting points more accurately in SGP resulted in smooth auto-focusing throughout the session this time, and the whole sequence ran perfectly.

So, having in the meantime 'read up' further regards combining images in PS, I've managed to successfully do so by firstly adjusting (levels, curves, astronomy tools, etc.) each one independently (R, G and B as previously aligned and stacked independently in DSS) before then merging them into a single RGB image using the channels menu. And as if by magic I now have colour showing!! YIPPEE!!!

After some further teaks and adjustments I now have a reasonable (for a very first attempt!) image of M51, in glorious colour!

I'm still working on it, so to speak - because at the moment I find that once I then combine this final RGB with the (old) Lum final image, everything completely washes out! As mentioned, I know that my original subs were very poor (evident in the L ones especially, with stars being 'blown out') so I'm hoping that some new decent Lum images will resolve this.

For the time being, I'm dead chuffed with the RGB only image, purely because it's my first one and I've managed to put these initial demons to rest at last!

Once again, many thanks to you all for your brilliant advice and assistance ….. I'm sure I'll be back here again if/when I hit the next brick wall!!

Tried to upload images but keeps saying file too large? Info says max file size for TIFF is up to 25.75 Mb, so I reduced to ~ 14 Mb or so, but still no joy. Is this function not working at the moment?

Attachment upload is not functioning at present. Been broken since November.

Your best bet is to put an image in Dropbox (or some manner of file share), OR, host the image at a site such as Flickr and post a link or embed the image URL in IMG tags.
