Usually, it's as simple as picking file/save as/ and then choosing the format and bit depth from the drop down menus....
What is the program not doing?
File saving is enabled during the trial period.

It's telling you that the jpeg is a lousy image format...

When you save to a jpeg, you're going from a 32 or 16 bit image, to an 8 bit image.
Thus degrading the image. That's what the error is saying.
And, yes, the jpegs look a lot worse than the xsif files that PI generates.

If you want your images to look really good, you need to keep them 32 bit, (or higher)
You can save 32 bit tiffs, but not all programs can open them.

So, basically, the program is working like it's supposed to.

It sounds like you are using the Screen Transfer Function (STF) to "stretch" the image. The STF does not alter the data!! It makes the image visible so that you can work with it prior to stretching. But, since the data are not stretched, the saved image will not be stretched.

You need to stretch the image data using the Histogram Transformation function.

You can ignore the format warnings about JPG and TIF files. They are just saying that those are not the ideal formats for astro images.

I hadn't thought of that, Kathy...
Yes, I'll bet the images are not stretched.

The process for doing that is a little weird.

In the lower left corner of the screen transfer tool, there is a little blue triangle.

Open the histogram transformation tool and drag that triangle to the bottom of it...
Right next to the preview button. (The circle icon)
Then drag and drop the small blue triangle from that tool onto the image.

It will now be stretched, and overexposed.
hit F12 (on a PC) to turn off the screen transfer function

    Is that a better image?

    Hi Rhoda -

There are a series of easy to follow video tutorials at the link below (Harry's Astro Shed).

    Harrysastroshed-pixinsight

Click on the NEWBIES tab then click on the "Welcome to NEWBIE" sign. This will open a screen with a column of tabs, each tab will open a short video tutorial. The tutorials are aimed at CCD imagers, but, I found them equally helpful for processing my DSLR images. I would suggest starting with the top tab (PREFACE) and just continue on down the list in order.

These are the first tutorials I used and I followed them step by step even though I didn't know what I was doing or why I was doing it. I also didn't understand what any of the process names meant. However, soon the steps started to make more sense, and, I was on my way.

Hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

You might consider Warren Keller's Inside PixInsight, $29.50 for paperback on Amazon. He does a great job of walking the reader through various PixInsight modules and workflows. When I have specific questions I turn to this book before wading through the online tutorials.
