Default Need a little guidance with PI and HDR combination...

I am working on an HDR combination for M42. I actually have three 'sets' of frames to use for the Luminance channel.

Ha x 600 seconds (nice detail all across the frame but of course the center is shot)
Ha x 300 seconds (finer detail in the center but the core is still cooked)
Lum x 30 seconds (Core still looks cooked but I have yet to actually stack them)

How would you approach the integration of these three sets in Pix Insight?

Links to articles and videos are greatly appreciated!

    Many thanks in advance

I tried HDR but couldn't get good results with it. Probably user error. What I ended up doing on my last M42 image was just stacking everything: throw it all in the pot and stir The short exposures got weighted equally with the long exposures in the averaging process, pulling down the overexposed core and contributing their detail. Not counting the RGB frames, which were all 60 seconds, I used:
    Ha 7x 120s
    Ha 4x 300s
    Ha 2x 600s
    L 6x 10s
    L 9x 60s
    The results were quite acceptable.

    Kathy's approach works well...
Another option is using the HDR tool... Very finicky to use though.
My best efforts were in making sure all images were 64 bit depth.
I had three sets of exposure times. I stacked each separately and combined the longest and middle exposure two, and then combined the shortest with the result.
    Good Luck!

    Thanks so far.

Well the list is shortened. I stacked the 300 sec Ha frames and they were ... well bad. Not sure what happened but the 600 sec Ha looked a lot better.

The 30 sec Lum fames are still cooked. No matter how far I bring the histogram down the trap never shows up. Guess I will need some like 10 seconds or so.

Well here is what I have so far. This is the RGB channels combined and a little historgram work not much else. As you can see the core is completely washed out. It looks like I really need to back off the durations!

    R=120 sec
    G-120 sec
    B=240 sec

and here is the 30 second lum frames, still blown out!

    Hi Tom,
I would be surprised if you couldn't figure out something with those exposure durations. I did straight 120s RGB (@f/5.3) the other day and nothing was blown out; I shot some 10s as well but it proved unnecessary.

Can you post unprocessed stacks to play with? I did at least one version of M42 with HDR in PI, but even once you've got an image that's got all the dynamic range you need, it's still quite hard to perform the series of masked stretches necessary to make it look right.

    Cheers,
    Charles

Got it. The core is only clipped in the 5/10m Ha, and the blue a little. The blue could be a problem, but looking at quick combination and small stretch I don't think the resulting color artifact is noticeable:

    core.jpg

So, it's just a matter of combining the lum with the Ha to get an HDR luminance like you want, and then doing some careful stretches to get definition throughout the image.

Here's an attempt that I am not totally happy with, but I think at least shows you've got good looking data.

    TomsOrionHDR_reduced.jpg

[edit: first I did a dynamic background extraction on everything] Basically I combined and stretched the RGB separately, then I made a separate HDR luminance by combining the 30s lum with the Ha; I used a really low threshold so it's more luminance than Ha...which is good, because the Ha is only a small part of the lum for the object, and if you just use the Ha as luminance it looks quite odd because the blue reflection nebula part doesn't have sharp luminance contrast where it should, and other funny things. Ideally you probably would want to do some kind of max with the lum for the bulk of the nebula, but I'm not exactly sure what right now.

For stretching both the RGB and the lum I used successive stretches with very fuzzy/smooth range masks covering the bright parts each time.

Then I did an LRGB combine of the stretched RGB and stretched luminance, did a deconvolution of the bright part, ACDNR on the dim part, saturate the bright part, desaturate the dim part.
