    Default Some Pixinsight Questions...

I will use this thread to consolidate my questions on using PixInsight as they pop up

I have a fairly good handle on initial calibration and the creation of masters. With one exception.

Cosmetic Correction. If I have an LRGB set that contains 1x1 binned and 2x2 binned frames do you have to run the CC for all the 1x1's reset it and run it again for the 2x2's ?

I have the calibration files for each. eg 600sec darks 1x1, 300sec darks 2x2, etc.

Page 28 in Inside PI says add all calibrated LRGB images iin.... I'm reading a lot that seems to indicate the program is intelligent enough to work out what's what if your .fits data is good.

But, being in the learning process myself, it's not alwYs that simple!

It says "Images of all filters" it does not mention binning.

I screwed something up, star alignment I think ended up with this...

wow.... if you carry on like that the universe will be 4x bigger from your backyard!

By the nature of what it does, i would think you can put any calibrated image in regardless of binning etc. Your's looks more like an alignment issue.

That looks like perfectly normal after a few adult beverages

I think that was an issue with star alignment I am going back and starting over.

But specifically I was wondering about Cosmetic Correction. I would 'think' it has to be done once for each binning setting once for all the 1x1 and again for all the 2x2. But don't know for sure.

Trial and error... Been doing a fair amount of that... Expcially on HDR Multiscale Transformation (Wavelets) Small changes on this can make a huge difference to the detail in things like dust lanes... But it becomes time consuming.

Perhaps someone with a bit more knowledge that you an me will come along and give a definitave answer!

You should run CC on each set of images separately.
The sky conditions and such change so it's better to run the L, and then each color channel or the OSC if shot that way.
To fix your alignment issue, always use the same reference image for all channels and stacks. Binned or not.
PI is smart enough to scale and align properly on the fly. This way, you only need to do it once

    **EDIT**
    Example
Use M101_600_Ha.xisf as the reference image for the L, the Ha, the R, G, and B channels.
This way everything is already aligned. Even if the RGB are binned. It won't matter. PI is very smart and powerful.

Thanks Jim, This might explain the horrid color cast in the upper right of the green channel I got...

I run the automatic background extractor on each channel separately as well...
Use the subtraction for the correction type and try both with and without normalization checked...

That will do a lot to correct the corner issues... If the vignetting is too severe, you can use the dynamic background extractor,
but that is a bit more involved and you should watch a few tutorials to figure it out.

Also, you may get better results waiting until the images are stretched before trying to fix the background...
Sometimes it works better than on linear images.

    Good Luck!

I don't bin, so I can't answer the CC question exactly. Warren doesn't mention the binning aspect of it. Try it both ways to see if it works. It's far easier to dump all your files in one CC batch and run it all at once, though.

In terms of the star alignment, run it again. Obviously something went haywire! Make sure you're actually stacking your aligned images and not another folder (I've done that) I complicate things and run the Subframeselector script to find the best reference image in my lum, and then do a reference to that frame.

For the background extraction, I run DBE on each filter separately before color combination. I don't like DBE's default settings so I always change them. Examine your background model before applying it--you want your background model to show a nice gradient without any lumpiness. It takes work. Once you have a nice gradient, then subtract it. Then I will color combine. After that, if there still seems to be a significant gradient, I may run DBE again (or ABE) to try to smooth the background out. The danger of this is that you will smooth out target signal.

Background neutralization and color calibration happens after that and I do two parallel processes for lum and color.

The LRGB combination happens in nonlinear relatively late for me.
    Stuart Forman
