    Default Processing Help?

I was wondering if someone wouldn't mind taking a crack at two files I have. I have been struggling with post processing and am just not sure if it's my data, me or both.
I have recently added an LPS D1 filter which seemed to make a big difference, yet I still can't get decent photos.

One is M15 - 37 subs at 2' @ISO 1600 - 1.25 hours total. Histogram in BYEOS was almost at the 2/3 mark.
One is M31 - 90 subs at 60" @ ISO 1600 - 1.30 hours total. I realize that M31 needs more exposure time, but the histogram in BYEOS was just over the 1/3 mark. I am still experimenting.Very Noisy.

Sensor temps were near 100+. Very high.
Here are the two dropbox links to the stacked, non stretched images. I have also included what I was able to do.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/ptk45c0y3s...%20PS.TIF?dl=0

    Thanks for any help.

Hi John. Here is your M15 with the log from Star Tools. It is a challenge processing when using a LP filter to get the colour balance correct. 100 degree sensor definitely does not help with the noise, are you using darks and dithering? Not sure what the smudge is toward the top of your image but I left it in there. I downloaded your M31 and will post when done. Overall the data is not too bad, thanks for letting me play with it and I hope my photo and log are of help. Keep at it, you are improving it just takes practice.

Is this an autosave.tif from DSS ? The histogram looks horribly narrow and cannot be expanded, that's why I ask because DSS usually is much better at that.

I did not crop the M15 one but I sense similar problems as with the M31 which is the one I was referring to earlier. The best I can make of it in DSS is this:

    m15.jpg

Note how imbalanced the colors are, this is something that one should not have to do normally. So I think there is something wrong with your TIF files.

Here are my versions, done in PixInsight. There's no way the histogram in either one was 1/3 or 2/3. I have included the histograms from the downloaded files prior to making any changes.

The extreme amount of stretching required limits the amount of noise reduction that can be done. There just isn't enough dynamic range there. You'd think from the number of subs and the exposure time that there would be more dynamic range, but it just isn't there. So I'm not sure what is going on there.

I'm not sure what the light smudge is at the top of the first image (bottom of the second image - I flipped it "right side up"). Looks like some kind of light leak.

It's not the autosave but is the "virgin" tiff from DSS.

Thanks Keith. I took screen shots of BYEOS for my records. At least in BYEOS the histogram was definitely just over the 1/3 mark for M31 and at 2/3 for the M15. I learned my lesson a couple weeks ago from it being underexposed. Problem is, I cannot locate the screen shots. I will try again tonight and record all data and post tomorrow.

    Thanks for the help.

Scott - Thanks very much for the workflow in Star Tools. I have been trying so hard with that program and just cannot get it right. Your workflow should help me understand better.

What is the "virgin tiff" of DSS? Something you saved? With settings applied or not? The best thing is to have the Autosave.tif that is just the plain stacked image, just so we are not wasting time working on an image that has been edited.

I attached my rendition of M31 here. Pretty much all DSS, a little tweaking in WLPG. I see many horizontal stripes. The data is very difficult to work with. Perhaps it is caused by the filter. Did you select the right camera type in DSS for stacking (Bayer mask)?

    m31_2stars (800x537).jpg

For 1.30 hours at 1600 ISO you should get a much better M31 than what you have.
