Thanks Scott! I forgot about that tick under Stacking Parameters. Am going to try that now.

I took another pass at this being less aggressive with the noise (although I did some suppression) to show the level of good data in there, alas it's on the same level as the noise making it hard to bring out.

Not sure what that purple thing is.

Thanks very much for the help UM! A few members have said that the LP filter hinders some things. But a couple weeks ago, before the filter, I was only able to do 45" subs before the exposure was blown out off the histogram. I guess, from my house, I just have to add LOTS more subs to counter the noise. The one thing that bothers me is that I shot M27 on same night and noise was not as heavy. Am starting to think that although M31 was high, it was over a tree and I had a neighbors security light bouncing off that tree in the same direction. M27 was facing the other way. This photo was processed quickly and could use more work but is less noisy.

I wish I could find the post that described it, but the BYEOS histogram isn't an accurate depiction of what the camera is collecting. My best recollection is that it is a representation of the stretched image BYEOS displays on the screen. I used to use it as a gauge, and like you I was taking short subs. I find that ignoring it and playing with the data from longer subs gives me a better result than what the BYEOS histogram does. When my three minute subs show up in the preview line at the bottom of the screen, they look a nasty light brown, fogging everything out. But the result I am able to get in post-processing tells me that the longer exposure allows for more color and detail than shorter subs can do. I am shooting from a highly light polluted area, so I am used to dealing with the effects.

Bob is correct. The BYE-EOS histograms is a stretched image. That's my big problem with it and it's the reason why so many people have incorrectly taken flats. SGP is a much better program, although it is a bit more complicated to use. (Not by much, though)

Thanks Bob. That's the first time I've heard this and makes sense. I watch video tutorials of processing in PS and their stacks show much more detail and brightness than mine. My stacks always seem to be too dark to begin with. Although, like so many other confusing opinions, others show that if your stack looks dark with very little detail, than your on the right track.
The next opportunity I get, I'm going to ignore the histogram in BYEOS and go for longer subs.

Thanks Stuart. You've helped me with calibration frames and suggested lengthening my flats from 1" to 3". BYEOS has an automated flats system that doesn't allow you to change anything. However, you can just do it manually and take whatever exposure you want. For the moment, I'm going to stick with BYEOS since I just bought the license last week.
SGP looks excellent and I will try the FREE version.

Here's a quote from the BYEOS forum. See post #5 which seems to sum up what you are referring to.
It seems that it is a jpeg histogram which doesn't truly represent what RAW data is capturing. In fact, the whole thread there is interesting.

That article hints at the issue using the BYEOS histogram to judge the raw data. I am familiar with this because it was one of my first mistakes.

To be clear, I am a satisfied BYEOS user. The software provides many features I find indispensable, including integrating with PHD2 for dithering, focus analysis using the FWHM and Bahtinov mask tools, and organizing my captures for each session. I just don't use the histogram to judge my exposure time since, as Guy says, the histogram is not based on the camera RAW data.

John - thanks for doing my research for me

I agree with your above statements 100% Bob. I really like BYEOS for the same reasons. Eventually, I will try SGP but just purchased the BYEOS license last week. This latest info on the histogram has answered a lot of confusing questions for me.
2 years ago, Guy (BYEOS programmer) stated that he was working on providing an option to show RAW data histogram...hasn't happened yet I guess.

Quote - "The histogram is derived from the jpg data which is pre-scaled to 8-bit and has white balance, sharpening and stretch."

...and so the learning process continues. With all the info (correct and in-correct) that floats on the internet, it makes learning a difficult process for a beginner. I think I'm going to need counseling soon.
